Trees Atlanta is a nonprofit community group that protects and improves Atlantas urban forest by planting, conserving, and educating. Since its beginnings, Trees Atlantas goals have been to plant new trees, conserve existing trees, replace trees lost to development and hazards, and educate the public on the many benefits of trees. Trees Atlanta has become one of the most widely-known and respected non-profits locally, as well as nationally, for their work as stewards of our urban environment. To date, Trees Atlanta has planted and cared for over 140,000 trees in metro Atlanta.


Job Description


The Urban Trees Lead (Landscape Installation Crew Member) is a crew member on a landscape installation crew that specializes in planting ball and burlap trees. The Urban Trees Lead will assist with large tree planting projects and maintenance, under the direction of the Urban Trees Supervisor.  Planting and maintenance of the tree palette occurs throughout the Greater Atlanta area and the daily outlook typically includes digging holes, loading and unloading trees using heavy machinery, spotting for your teammates in traffic, driving work trucks and trailers, and manually finishing planting projects with backfilling, mulching, pruning, watering and cleanup.


The Urban Trees Lead will:

  • Follow planting plans, designs, schedules as directed by the Urban Trees Supervisor.

  • Plant ball and burlap and container trees in a wide range of sizes, typically using hand tools.

  • Facilitate full-service plantings that include site preparation, utilizing standardized best practices for tree planting, and site clean-up.

  • Perform tree care and maintenance, including but not limited to watering, mulching, pruning, staking, insecticide application, reconstructing tree berms, patching erosion, weeding tree wells, inspecting and evaluating tree health.

  • Operate heavy equipment (trucks, trailers, skid steer, water tanks, pumps, etc.) in a variety of settings including new construction, parking lots, park spaces, streetscapes, downtown environments, public right-of-ways and the Atlanta Beltline Arboretum.

  • Assist with the leadership of volunteers projects on planting and/or maintenance projects (May occasionally lead small volunteer projects 5 people or less).

  • Assist the Green Infrastructure Manager with G.I. projects whenever required.

  • Complete additional assigned work, including truck checks, inventory checks, equipment inspections, updating tree information in ArcGIS, and daily timesheets.

  • Use Google Workspace to stay organized and communicate within the organization.



  • 1-3 months of experience in landscape installation OR a year of experience in a similar line of work such as construction, hardscape installation, irrigation installation, site/drainage work, agriculture or gardening. A degree is not necessary to do this job but a passion for arboriculture, horticulture, conservation, forestry, urban ecology and/or community improvement are all desirable.

  • 1-3 months of experience operating heavy equipment (Bobcat, dingo, mini excavator, skid steer, lull, backhoe, etc.)

  • Outstanding interpersonal communication and ability to relate to other employees.

  • Demonstrate an understanding of safety around heavy machinery and construction sites, as well as health and safety standards for the crew.

  • Have familiarity of Google Workspace and/or Microsoft Office Professional and be comfortable with utilizing various online and desktop based software (working knowledge or exposure to ArcGIS helpful)


Physical Requirements:

  • At least 21 years old with a 3-year with clear driving history.

  • Ability to drive a truck with a loaded trailer.

  • Must pass a pre-employment background screening, drug test, and DOT physical.

  • Have negative COVID test within 3 days of first day of work and proof of COVID vaccine

  • Ability to conduct repetitive, moderate to strenuous physical activity in the field and lift up to 70 pounds.

  • Willing and able to work outdoors in all weather conditions at all times of year.
