The Digital Integration and Predictive Technologies (DIPT) group within Amgen's Process Development organization has established a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)-based modeling framework to understand the mixing hydrodynamics and mass transfer characteristics in certain bioprocess unit operations. The CFD framework allows improved understanding, reduces risk, and minimizes experimentation during design, scale-up, transfer and operation of biopharmaceutical processes. To accelerate the CFD model development process within this framework and operationalize it across Amgen sites, the DIPT group is seeking a 6-month graduate/undergraduate co-op student. We are looking for candidates proficient in CAD generation, with good understanding of fluid mechanics, transport phenomena, numerical methods, and a hands-on experience in using commercial CAD and CFD software packages.

Work may include, but is not limited to:

  • Construct, clean, and prepare CAD geometries of process vessels for computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis.
  • Setup of a single- or multi-phase CFD model of a process vessel in a commercial CFD software package, post-processing of the results, as well as interpretation of the data.
  • Quantitatively calibrate and validate the models using experimental data and perform design exploration studies.
  • Establish and maintain model repositories and develop automation strategies for CFD model development and data visualization.

    Basic Qualifications


Amgen requires that all individuals applying for an undergraduate internship or an undergraduate co-op assignment at Amgen must meet the following criteria:

18 years or older

Currently enrolled in a full time Bachelor's Degree program from an accredited college or university with a 3.0 minimum GPA or equivalent

Completion of one year of study from an accredited college or university prior to the internship commencing

Enrolled in a full time Bachelor's or Combined Bachelor's/Master's degree program following the potential internship or co-op assignment with an accredited college or university

Must not be employed at the time the internship starts

Preferred Qualifications
  • Degree concentration(s) in Mechanical, Biomedical, or Aerospace Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, or related fields.
  • Experience with commercial finite-element or finite-volume modeling software, for example ANSYS,Comsol, or Abaqus.
  • Ability to read engineering drawings and translate into CAD geometries.
  • Some software development experience, which may include engineering-focused languages such asMatlab; Python experience a plus.
