Samsungs Location Group was established in October 2012 to develop market-leading location technology for mobile applications. We have a team of about 90 people in the US driving our technology forward for future generation products. Our main activities include architecture definition, silicon design, software development, and platform integration. The Location Group is part of Samsungs Application Processor and Modem Group. We work closely together to develop highly integrated products, and to find opportunities to optimize our products for market success.

OVERVIEW & IMPACT:

Samsung Semiconductor, Inc. in San Jose is seeking a star GNSS systems engineer/architect. Candidate will be instrumental in defining and developing innovative architectures for GNSS IP integrated into SoCs targeted to a broad portfolio of products. Role will be part of the systems engineering/architecture team responsible for specification, receiver architecture, modeling/simulations, system design and verification of all GNSS/location technology chipset products.

Our ideal candidate would be an expert in architecting and modeling wireless baseband receivers for GNSS systems with a good grasp of area-performance-power tradeoffs, hardware-software tradeoffs, with experience collaborating closely with hardware design, design verification, RF systems, firmware and driver teams.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Thoroughly understand specifications of radio navigation systems such as GPS, GLONASS, GALILEO, Beidou and other signals and translate it into receiver architectures and specifications for our target products.
  • Design advanced signal processing algorithms, front-end and baseband architectures for location receivers.
  • Develop/manage simulation models for advanced algorithms and bit-accurate receiver design
  • Define floating and fixed point architectures.
  • Intimately work with large receiver end-to-end simulation models to demonstrate/benchmark system performance, verify functional behavior and validate hardware design.
  • Define and develop test cases and test vectors, and enhance related processes, collaborate with design and verification engineers to verify the hardware design against the golden reference.
  • Partner with firmware systems engineers to influence firmware algorithms that optimize system performance
  • Tightly collaborate with hardware, firmware, platform and test engineers to realize the architecture and demonstrate the expected gains on target platforms.
  • Participate in key research and development activities, IP creation with a goal of developing the worlds best location technology in target markets.
  • Must be open for occasional international travel (under ~2 trips a year).

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • Deep understanding and experience with wireless receiver architecture for GNSS receivers and/or CDMA receivers.
  • Excellent foundation in signal processing, detection theory, estimation theory, wireless channels, random processes, demodulation and decoding.
  • Good understanding of acquisition and tracking algorithms.
  • Strong modeling skills in C++ and Matlab.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • PhD with 2+ years or MS with 5+ years in Electrical Engineering, Aeronautical/Aerospace Engineering, Physics or related areas
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

PREFERRED SKILLS:

  • Experience architecting/re-architecting large C++ simulation models, developing related automation processes.
  • Prior experience with semiconductor IP development process.
  • Modeling experience of communication transceivers, analog/mixed signal blocks and familiarity with crystal oscillators
  • GNSS commercialization experience
  • Wireless/GNSS lab performance characterization and root-causing experience
