RedLeaf is an expanding startup company utilizing a proprietary variety of sorghum to create natural products used in functional ingredients and colorants. RedLeaf has been recognized “Best University Start Up” by NCET2 and as a potential leader in building Kentucky’s agricultural technology ecosystem. By creating innovative natural products, RedLeaf is helping to drive new economic opportunities for Kentucky farmers and break through products for food & beverage, cosmetics and more. RedLeaf is looking for an Agriculture Operations Assistant for the summer and fall (May – November) to assist with all elements of our growing and harvest operations. The Ag Ops Assistant will work closely with our Life Scientist in all elements of our day to day growing, harvesting, and processing RedLeaf’s unique crop. In particular, critical activities will include: helping and overseeing RedLeaf growers during planting season, managing and coordinating seasonal workers before and during harvest; ensuring the success of our bulk harvest by helping oversee, trouble-shoot, and quality control leaf harvest logistics; and helping with various field trials and auxiliary agricultural tasks.

This is a truly unique opportunity for a passionate and motivated candidate to get involved with the development of a revolutionary new crop and agricultural supply chain. You will work closely with RedLeaf’s Life Scientist, receive close coaching and training, and our hope is that successful interns will be offered opportunities for full time employment at the conclusion of the internship.

Ideal candidates will be organized and self-driven, self-starters with high autonomy an accountability, with an interest and enthusiasm in agronomics, farming, and/or soil science. Ongoing and effective communication with RedLeaf management and team members is also essential to ensure the Company stays focused on performing value adding work. Overall, RedLeaf is looking for a motivated, hardworking, and ambitious candidate excited about in working with both in the field and with a high performing science driven startup environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Support RedLeaf growers during planting season, e.g., ensure seed, equipment, materials are in place; be present help growers, answer questions, ensure task completion
  • Manage and coordinate seasonal workers before and during harvest
  • Support fall harvest operations: oversee, trouble-shoot, and quality control field operations and logistics, including hand-harvesting by seasonal workers, daily leaf drying, baling, weekly trucking and storage logistics
  • Support various field trials and auxiliary agricultural tasks, including seed cleaning, herbicide trials, mechanical harvest trials
  • Basic data recording and collection
  • Work with Life Scientist to learn RedLeaf operations, balance workloads, support farmers and overall ensure success of RedLeaf Ag operations
Skills / Knowledge / Abilities

Qualifications and requirements:

  • Demonstrated interest in agricultural sciences related to botanical life and/or agronomics
  • Independent self-starter able to work independently, proactively identify and address problems
  • Energetic, enthusiastic attitude
  • Effective verbal and written communication
  • Availability summer and fall
  • Majoring in a field in Bachelor of Science (BS) preferred but not required.
  • Ability to move agricultural equipment and materials, including bales, seed bags, etc.
  • Ability to commit to 20-40 hours per week; during planting (May, June) and Harvest (Sept, Oct) 40 hours is highly preferred
