The Strategic Planning and Operations Director will have a broad range of responsibilities in support of Amgen's U.S. Marketing Operations and Innovation group (MOI) within U.S. Business Operations (USBO). This includes strategic planning, team organization and change leadership as we develop, drive and deliver cross-brand support, optimization and innovation initiatives. The role reports to the Executive Director Marketing Operations and Innovation, and is based out of our global headquarters in Thousand Oaks, CA.

This role is expected to build trust-based partnerships with leaders and teams within the USBO

organization, enabling us to capitalize on new opportunities established through MOI team efforts in partnership with brand teams. This includes helping brand teams establish and execute cross-functionally aligned strategies and related tactics that meaningfully support customer needs and positively impact patient's lives, while delivering growth.

The successful candidate will support MOI in driving key operational and innovation initiatives across dynamic brand planning, embedding customer engagement and agile principles, customer journey work, agency optimization and excellence, and media and channel/CRM. This person will be a well-rounded marketer with experience and expertise in marketing and an ability to envision and drive marketing of the future.

In addition to members of the MOI team, General Managers, Brand leaders and Brand teams, the Strategic Planning and Operations Director will partner with Human Resources, Global Learning and Performance, Compliance, Regulatory, Legal and Finance professionals amongst others.

Role and responsibilities of the Strategic Planning and Operations Director include:
  • Partners closely with MOI leadership to define and deliver key priorities
  • Partners with cross-functional leaders to shape and implement new programs
  • Drives team effectiveness and optimization programs taking organizational and team interdependencies into account
  • Organizes, leads and facilitates meetings, training, forums and workshops with cross-functional executive leaders and brand teams as required, including knowledge sharing workshops as well as the MOI team
  • Partners with Learning & Performance to design and deliver training solutions for executive and other stakeholders
  • Creates and implements stakeholder engagement and communication plans
  • Establishes success metrics and leading indicators for change implementation and effectiveness
  • Serves as lead for operational budget across MOI responsibility for integration across our MOI teams, and maintaining and governing our MOI budget.
  • Analyzes competitive activity, structure and marketing trends to identify further opportunities to add value to brand marketing organization
  • Manages complex, cross-functional projects
  • Integrates multiple points of view into shared solutions
  • Champions and drives change
  • Influences peers and senior leaders


Basic Qualifications:

Doctorate degree and 4 years of Organizational Design/Change Management/Strategic Planning and/or Marketing experience

OR

Master's degree and 7 years of Organizational Design/Change Management/Strategic Planning and/or Marketing experience

OR

Bachelor's degree and 9 years of Organizational Design/Change Management/Strategic Planning and/or Marketing experience

Preferred Qualifications:
  • MBA
  • Experience and a track record of success in organizational design and change management and/or project management experience in the biopharmaceutical industry
  • Demonstrated understanding and expertise in marketing and direct experience with developing brand strategies, regional brand plans, or brand execution plans on a Global, Region or local brand team
  • Demonstrated excellence working in a matrixed organization, strategic thinking skills and sound project management skills to develop, implement and support effective and efficient business operations
  • Commercial operations or marketing experience at Amgen
  • Informed with current biopharmaceutical industry knowledge, news and trends and able to apply to programs
  • Communicates effectively and demonstrates impact influencing others
  • Deep organizational skills and detail orientation
  • Highly structured and strong ability to translate complex data/information into simple, actionable insights
  • Experience with project leadership in addition to strong project management skills
  • Independent, motivated, team member with experience in a matrix environment
  • Adaptable, and thrives in a changing environment
  • Comfortable with ambiguous work assignments
  • Accomplished managing change in a complex, matrix organization
  • Able to foster trusted relationships with key partners within brands and other cross-functional partners
