This is a remote position and could be based anywhere in California. Preference for Los Angeles Area, Bay Area, or Sacramento.

Organization Overview:

Council for a Strong America (CSA) is a national nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C., with additional staff in nine states. CSA seeks a Senior Associate for Fight Crime: Invest in Kids, our law enforcement leaders and Mission Readiness, our retired military leaders to make a difference for kids and families by joining the California Team as we work in coalition with leaders in early childhood, expanded learning, mental health and nutrition to ensure California's kids are healthy, well-educated and prepared for success.

Job Overview

Senior Associate will work with the team to build and cultivate a statewide organization of leaders in law enforcement (District Attorneys, Police Chiefs and Sheriffs) and retired military (Admirals and Generals), including mobilizing these messengers to support and advocate for increased state and federal investments in programs and policies that benefit our children, communities,and economy, such as early childhood and K-12 education, afterschool programs, and food access.

The goals of the position are to (1) strategically steward the voice of Fight Crime: Invest in Kids and Mission Readiness members across California on issues relating to strengthening investments in children and youth and (2) activate and mobilize these leaders to educate policy-makers and the public about the benefit of ongoing, impactful, and equitable investments in children to local communities and national security.

Responsibilities and Duties

Member Recruitment and Engagement

  • Identify and recruit new members, engage and maintain relationships with members of the law enforcement and retired military community in collaboration with the CA Director of Member Engagement and Strategy and Fight Crime and Mission Readiness National Directors.

  • Mobilize Fight Crime and Mission Readiness members to support state and federal initiatives, particularly those related to investments in education and health improvements that will strengthen communities and prepare children for present and future success in collaboration with the CA State Deputy Director.

  • Work with CA State Deputy Director to bring member voices to state policy-maker meetings with members and state legislators.

  • Collaborate with the CA team to build and maintain relationships with state ally organizations.

Policy Advocacy

  • Help set an annual legislative agenda for Fight Crime: Invest in Kids and Mission: Readiness California with the CA team. Work with allies to identify policy opportunities and threats.

  • Working with the CA CSA team, track policy development and ally actions in order to determine the optimal use of Fight Crime: Invest in Kids and Mission Readiness, (law enforcement or retired military members) to advance policy. Interact with advocates and work productively with organizations engaged in the policy development process.


  • Develop creative and relevant approaches and communications for the recruitment and engagement of members in collaboration with the CA Deputy Director and Director of Member Engagement and Strategy.

  • Work with the Director of Member Engagement and Strategy to draft and submit earned media pieces, including op-eds and letters to the editor. Draft talking points for members to use at media events and for legislative testimony. Provide input for messaging around broad policy goals and advocacy issues, including earned media campaigns (letters to the editor, Op-Eds, blog posts), content creation for social media efforts, and sign-on letters.

  • Work with ReadyNation Sr. Associate with social media messaging.

  • Create content for regular communication with Fight Crime and Mission: Readiness members through e-newsletters, social media campaigns, and other means.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Strong commitment to our mission and strategic vision;

  • At least three years of experience working in a related field (such as advocacy, organizing, communications, education, public interest, or sales);

  • Experience working with law enforcement and/or the military is a plus.

  • Extremely detail-oriented and well organized;

  • Self-starter and ability to work independently, juggle multiple projects at once, and respond rapidly and flexibly to changing priorities while meeting deadlines;

  • Demonstrated ability to be an effective and persuasive communicator, both orally and in writing;

  • Able to present sometimes complex information in a coherent, persuasive manner; in a variety of forums;

  • Proficient with Google Drive/Word/Excel/PowerPoint;

  • Passion for issues affecting California's children & youth, particularly impacting underserved communities.

  • Experience with member organizations, grant writing, and/or policy advocacy a plus.

Salary Range: $65,000 to $75,000 depending on experience


Once travel is allowed, frequent travel may be required within the state. Occasional travel is required out of the state.
