Shift

Monday-Friday 8:00 – 5:00PM. Occasional weekends when necessary.

Job Summary

Position will be employed in laboratory/experimental studies related to biofuels and environmental catalysis.

Responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:
- Leads specific studies or aspects of studies related to processing chemicals and materials, including determination of chemical and physical properties, composition, structure, relationships and reactions.
- Confers with scientists and engineers to conduct analyses of research projects, interpret test results, or develop nonstandard tests.
- Analyzes test information and data.
- Guides the work of peers, technicians or other support staff in preparing test solutions, compounds, and reagents for laboratory tests and analysis.

The University of Kentucky Center for Applied Energy Research (UK CAER) is seeking to fill a Senior Scientist position for its Biofuels & Environmental Catalysis research group. The successful candidate will lead CAER’s program in microalgae-based CO2 capture and utilization. CAER’s algae program was initiated in 2008 and is currently focused on the cultivation of microalgae using CO2 present in industrial flue gas, as well as in ambient air, in addition to the processing of produced algae biomass into products such as bioplastic feedstock, fertilizer and high value chemicals. In addition to leading funded research projects, tasks will include grant proposal preparation, the preparation of scientific manuscripts and providing direction, guidance, and training for Center scientific and engineering personnel and students. The candidate is expected to: 1) supervise the cultivation of microalgae at scales of up to 1200 L; 2) oversee (and assist where necessary) the analysis of algae cultures and produced biomass using diverse analytical methods; 3) supervise and assist in the processing of produced biomass; 4) prepare progress reports for project sponsors; 5) lead project planning meetings; 6) provide training to other personnel and students; 7) prepare research proposals; 8) prepare scientific manuscripts; 9) present project results at scientific conferences.

Skills and Abilities
Candidates should have extensive knowledge of ‒ and experience in ‒ the cultivation of microalgae. Excellent computer skills and communication skills (oral and written) are required. The successful candidate shall have a minimum of a PhD degree from an accredited college or university in phycology, biology, biosystems engineering or a related field + 0-5 years of experience, or the equivalent in education, experience and training.
