Job Summary

Over the past 30 years the University of Kentucky Center for Applied Energy Research [CAER] has built up an outstanding research program directed to high-value carbon materials derived from coal and petroleum resources such as pitches, binders, cokes, activated carbons, fibers and composites. CAER is staffing up its carbon materials program and seeks one or more research scientists at the Assistant, Associate, Senior or Principal levels. The group will be primarily responsible for carrying out process trials for coal liquefaction, distillations and processing of mesophase pitch. Applicants for the research scientist positions will preferably have 1.) experience in carbon science, coal or petroleum chemistry and a broad-based knowledge in synthetic organic chemistry, including experience in synthesis, purification, qualitative and quantitative chemical analysis and physical property testing; 2.) strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated record of teamwork, adaptability, innovation and initiative; and 3.) the ability to work well with all levels of personnel throughout CAERs laboratories. Skills / Knowledge / Abilities

Candidate should have experience in the cultivation of algae or related microorganisms. Experience with standard wet chemistry techniques is also preferred. Good computer skills and communication skills (oral and written) are required. The successful candidate shall have a minimum of a BS degree from an accredited college or university in biology or a related field + 0-3 years of experience, or the equivalent in education, experience and training.
