Research Engineer - Non-conventional Machining

Role Summary:This position collaborates with a world class group of researchers in cutting edge manufacturing process development. The goals of this position include researching, developing, and deploying innovative process designs for electro-thermal, electro-chemical, and non-traditional machining of aerospace materials. Intersecting with colleagues with expertise in materials, design, measurement, and equipment development is key to delivering robust, capable industrial processes.

Essential Responsibilities:

You will:







+ Apply computational and lab hands-on skills to design, prototype, and validate next generation manufacturing processes, including electrochemical machining, electrothermal machining, chemical milling, additive processing (electro deposition, directed energy deposition, plasma deposition), and other non-conventional subtractive processing for shaping, machining, and finishing metals, composites, and matrix materials.



+ Follow a manufacturing readiness level scorecard to drive the manufacturing process development from benchtop testing through shop pilot implementation.



+ Work with GE Research and GE businesses teams to identify customer requirements and define manufacturing process specifications.



+ Formulate plans for assigned projects and work with leadership and customers to track progress toward project deliverables.



+ Participate in the development and implementation of actionable multi-generational technology plans for manufacturing.



+ Effectively communicate results by preparing written reports and delivering oral presentations.

















Qualifications/Requirements:







+ Doctorate Degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related field OR Masters Degree in the same with a minimum of 2 years of industrial experience in Manufacturing process development or Supply Chain Operations.



+ Proficiency in wet chemical process development



+ Experience with at least 2 non-conventional or additive manufacturing techniques



+ Demonstrated ability to independently perform analytical and experimental research work



+ Must be willing to work out of an office located in Niskayuna, NY



+ Must be 18 years or older.

+ Proficiency in developing, conducting, and analyzing statistically designed experiments in factory and laboratory conditions



+ Numerical control and tool path development knowledge



+ Hands-on experience in machining applications; turning and milling



+ Experience in writing compelling proposals to external government and commercial agencies for the development of next generation manufacturing technologies



+ Effective written and oral communication and interpersonal skills with ability to function on an interdisciplinary team to execute research projects



+ Record of publications and innovation evidenced by peer reviewed journal articles, conference proceedings, technical books, or issued patents



+ Highly innovative, self-motivated, and able to conduct research independently.



+ Demonstrated curiosity, critical thinking, and strong influencing skills with customers, upper-level management, and project teams.
