Under the direction of the Laboratory Manager, independently conducts and coordinates experiments and laboratory related procedures as defined in the research plan and serves on a research team involved in the molecular epidemiologic investigation of factors that influence disease risk and prognosis by applying established methods, procedures, and techniques.

Research Experiments

  • Communicates closely with personnel for all studies regarding collection and analysis of specimens on a daily basis.
  • Facilitates coordination with study personnel and external personnel (courier, etc.) regarding delivery of specimens to ensure processing within protocol specified time frames.
  • Maintains detailed storage records of specimens.
  • Prepares samples for analysis with outside laboratories.
  • Maintains tracking logs of delivery of specimens and reports any deviations from protocol to laboratory coordinator/supervisor.
  • May coordinate outside blood draws or other laboratory procedures for study subjects.
  • Supports emergency protocols and equipment including notification systems.

Data Collection and Preparation

  • Collects, analyzes, and interprets data resulting from experimentation.
  • Performs literature searches to develop information of relevance to the research.
  • Prepares appropriate and understandable representations of data such as sequences, graphs, charts, etc.
  • Participates in the preparation of reports and presentation of the research findings.
  • Retrieves and manipulates research data. Performs statistical tests.
  • Documents procedures and archives essential programs and data sets.
  • Provides tables, charts, and reports of analysis data.

Laboratory

  • Schedules and monitors utilization of laboratory facilities, equipment, and supplies.
  • Monitors and inspects equipment and instrument performance; obtains necessary maintenance and repair and emergency response.
  • Records and tracks performance.
  • Orders and maintains stock of laboratory supplies.
  • May provide technical direction to laboratory technicians and student workers.
  • Monitors work in progress to ensure accomplishment is timely and in accordance with reasonable methods and standards.
  • Instructs others in laboratory methods, procedures, and techniques and provides technical guidance and direction as required.
  • Performs specimen processing of urine, blood, water, placenta, stool, nails, nucleic acids and other sample types as needed.
  • Manages sample archives and retrieval of samples in active Biorepository and Dartmouth Specimen Storage Facility.
  • Refers and ships samples to testing laboratory as needed and according to protocols.

Other

  • Learns analytic software tools for specialized assays.
  • Communicates respectfully with a diverse community.
  • Willingness to learn additional procedures as studies are modified/expanded.
  • Willingness and ability to work a flexible schedule including occasional evenings and weekends.
  • May require occasional travel to study sites located off campus to retrieve samples, attend meetings and other study related business.
