Given Amherst's distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the ways in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.

The Research Assistant will support all of our laboratory's efforts to investigate molecular mechanisms underlying regulation of bacterial gene expression that are critical to host-microbe interactions. This is a 1-year, term position, funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation, that may be extended for a second year, contingent upon funding availability. We focus on two bacterial systems: Vibrio cholerae, which we study in the context of a Drosophila as a model host, and Vibrio fischeri. We use a variety of approaches, including molecular techniques (PCR, DNA extraction, and cloning), microbial genetics, confocal microscopy, gene expression assays, metabolic measurements, and Drosophila survival assays to understand the regulation of novel mechanisms that underlie microbial virulence and symbiosis in these systems. The Research Assistant will have the opportunity to contribute to all aspects of the lab's activities, and will assist with lab management and fly maintenance on a limited basis as well. In addition, the Research Assistant will work closely with a diverse set of undergraduate students in the laboratory to ensure that students are properly trained and working safely with molecular biology protocols. Lastly, the Research Assistant will take appropriate actions to support a diverse workforce and participates in the College's efforts to create a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming work environment.
