Job Summary
Do you enjoy sports or working outside? Are you looking for temporary summer employment? If so, the City of Salem has multiple job opportunities for highly motivated individuals to join our Parks and Recreation team!

We are currently hiring Program Aides (I), Recreation Assistants (II) and Recreation Leads (III) to support the City's Softball program. Work times will vary and may require staff to work on holidays, depending on the area of assignment. This recruitment is for temporary positions limited to 1200 hours per calendar year, however most of the work hours will be during April - September 2021. The Recreation I-III (Program Aide, Recreation Assistant, Recreation Lead) is a series classification where incumbents will be placed at the assigned level based on skills, experience, as well as job duties assigned.

Duties of these positions include assisting recreation staff with the day-to-day operations of Wallace Marine Park Softball Complex, local high school softball fields, and associated programs. Assigned duties can include manual labor, custodial and clerical tasks.

The Recreation Lead (III) position may also perform lead work, direction, and/or supervision of less experienced staff, including evaluation of performance, training and guidance. Recreation leaders may perform other program coordination and development as well, such as meeting with sponsors, planning tournaments, determining staffing needs or working with the press.

Successful candidates should be highly organized, work effectively with others, follow oral and written direction, possess basic computer proficiency skills, and enjoy being part of a team. Assignment to the various recreational programs will be based on the candidate's skills and level of experience.

Program Aide Salary: $12.00/hour
Recreation Assistant Salary: $12.48/hour
Recreation Lead Salary: $13.48/hour

What are the minimum qualifications?
  • Must pass a pre-employment background check.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older at time of hire.
  • Depending on area of assignment, a Oregon Driver license and driving record that meets the City of Salem's driving standards may be required.
  • Must have the ability to obtain an ATV license.
  • Program Aide (I): One year or season of experience in recreation, education, sports, or related field, or equivalent combination of experience and training working with youth and/or adults in a recreational setting.
  • Recreation Assistant (II): One year or more of customer service or related seasonal experience demonstrating program support or coordination in recreation, education, sports, or extracurricular activities using specialized skills, experience and training while working with youth and adults in a recreational setting.
  • Recreation Lead (III): Two years of or more of customer service or related experience demonstrating leadership roles in recreation, education, sports, or extracurricular activities using advanced or technical skills, experience and training while working with youth and adults in a recreational setting.

Preferred Skills/Experience
  • First Aid/CPR/AED certification preferred.
  • Experience working with youth.
  • Experience in various sports desired.
  • Cash/check handling
  • Cleaning/maintenance
  • Ball field maintenance
  • Volunteer recruitment or coordination of recreation programs
  • Bilingual proficiency
