We are hiring a Process Development Senior Associate Scientist at our Rhode Island Site. This is a laboratory-based role that will provide an opportunity to develop leadership, teamwork and communication skills through partnership with colleagues in the wider Process Development, Manufacturing, and Quality organizations. The Process Development organization at Amgen develops, characterizes and leads the commercialization of the drug substance manufacturing processes for all late-stage and commercial programs across the Amgen portfolio. Further, the Sr. Associate Scientist will be immersed in all aspects of a commercial bulk drug manufacturing facility.

Responsibilities Include
  • Apply scientific principles to the development, characterization and optimization of upstream processes to enable commercial advancement of large molecule programs
  • Design experimentation to support process design, efficiency improvements, process robustness, and problem resolution
  • Lead both laboratory-based and technical teams
  • Present and author technical documentation
  • Demonstrate science driven data analysis and interpretation of complex programs
  • Provide technical support and lead troubleshooting of commercial drug substance manufacturing processes across cell culture disciplines
  • Drive new approaches and utilize innovative thinking to contribute to technology development
  • Work across discipline with the desire to expand and develop skills in both upstream and downstream technologies
  • Remain current on the latest industrial, scientific and regulatory trends to assist in the review and authorship of relevant sections of global regulatory filings


Basic Qualifications:

Master's degree and 3 years scientific experience

OR

Bachelor's degree and 5 years scientific experience

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, or other relevant sciences
  • Strong understanding and hands-on experience in mammalian cell culture and small-scale bioreactors
  • Proven track record with upstream problem solving and troubleshooting experience in both a process development and commercial manufacturing support environment
  • Leadership experience of progressively increased scope and a demonstrated ability to lead a lab-based group of upstream scientists to deliver on objectives within defined timelines
  • Familiarity with design of experiments and statistical analysis of data
  • Proven ability to independently identify, develop and implement scientific solutions to practical problems including seeking out technology development opportunities
  • Excellent verbal communication and scientific writing skills
  • Demonstrated success working with diverse team members in a cross-functional environment
