POSTDOCTORAL SCIENTIST - IMMUNOLOGY

A fully supported postdoctoral position is available in the Preclinical and Translational Research Group for studies to develop a novel vaccines for infectious diseases. Our current programs are focused on tuberculosis, nontuberculous mycobacteria and Varicella-zoster virus. We are seeking to initiate new programs to develop candidates for additional emerging and high-consequence diseases. The successful candidate will be engaged in development of vaccines for a variety of infectious diseases. Expertise in human immunology and cellular immunoassays, including multiparametric flow cytometry, is a must. A key aspect will include combining information from multiple levels such as genes, proteins and whole cells to gain a clear, multi-scale understanding of vaccine function and/or small animal models during infection and disease. They will also be responsible for characterizing immune responses following vaccination in challenge models. Excellent organizational and communication skills are required.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Design and execute research projects that advance the development of vaccine delivery platforms and generate effective vaccines for infectious diseases
  • Assessment of immunological endpoints in vaccine clinical trials including assay development and validation
  • Acquire and analyze data
  • Prepare manuscripts for publication in peer reviewed journals
  • Presents research at group and internal/external scientific meetings
  • Participate in grant writing
  • Communicate with research management on a regular basis
  • Supervision of research assistant(s) and/or associate(s)

Requirements

 

Qualifications:

  • A PhD with related laboratory experience in Immunology, Pathobiology, Microbiology or similar field and a minimum of 3 years of related laboratory experience
  • A strong track record of publication
  • Experience and skills in clinical immunology and/or cellular biology assays
  • Experience working with small animal models of infectious diseases
  • Experience working under Biosafety Level 2 or 3 (BL2/BL3) conditions
  • Willingness and ability to work under BL3 conditions with appropriate training
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
  • Must be self-motivated, organized and be able to work within a team

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Expertise with one or more of the following areas: infectious disease vaccine development, T cell effector or memory functions, immune responses to bacterial and/or viral infections, development and production of nucleic acid based vaccine candidates
  • Prior experience with mouse procedures (e.g. isolation and processing of tissues for imaging and ex vivo culture, injections by different routes) is preferred
  • Experience and skills in cell culture and human T- and B-cell based functional assays (e.g., ELISPOT, CTL, ELISA, CBA, Luminex and flow cytometry)
    • Proficiency with appropriate usage of statistical methods for data analysis
    • Familiarity with data analysis and graphing software such as FlowJo, Prism, and/or Jump
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information
    • Ability to work with co-workers and outside agencies professionally and tactfully
    • Possess a work ethic that includes neatness, punctuality, and accuracy
