Summary:
Performs advanced microbiological testing on water, bulk pharmaceutical chemicals and drug products; collects samples and prepares standard and sample solutions; maintains appropriate records; provides lead supervision and training to more junior staff; and performs highly technical and specialized duties.

  • Carries out responsibilities in accordance with the organizations policies, procedures, and state, federal and local laws.
  • Collects purified water samples from the various USP Purified Water Loops used to manufacture or test drug products.
  • Prepares media used in the microbiological testing of bulk pharmaceutical chemicals,drug products and components.
  • Prepares samples for shipment to outside contract laboratory for microbiological testing.
  • Performs advanced microbiological testing on water, bulk pharmaceutical chemicals and drug products.
  • Collects environmental samples for microbiological analysis.
  • Validates microbiology test methods.
  • Reviews data generated by other Microbiologists.
  • Trains Junior Microbiologist on microbiology test methods.
  • Drafts Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for the microbiology laboratory.
  • Prepares written reports of any investigations conducted.
  • Ensures compliance with current Good Manufacturing Procedures (cGMP) requirements at all times.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

 

Required Knowledge and Skills:

 

Knowledge of:

  • Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and other regulatory requirements.
  • Microbiology and microbiological test method development and validation.
  • Sampling methods, automated identification and quality control systems.
  • Classical microbiology techniques (i.e. gram staining, pour and streak plating, culture maintenance, aseptic techniques).
  • Microscope, autoclave, and laminar flow hood usage.
  • Mathematics and statistics.
  • Sample preparation techniques.
  • Computer applications and programs.

 

Skill in:

  • Reading, writing and speaking English.
  • Reading, understanding and compliance with Company policies and procedures, including safety rules and regulations.
  • Operating a personal computer.
  • Providing leadership and training to all levels of the Microbiologist position.
  • Assisting in troubleshooting and problem solving.
  • Accurately performing routine testing procedures, as scheduled.

 

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions: Incumbents in this class are subject to
extended periods of sitting, standing, walking, lifting materials weighing up to 50pounds, vision to
monitor and moderate to loud noise levels. Incumbents may be exposed to or work with toxic
materials, toxic gases, electrical hazards, dangerous tools and equipment. Work is performed in
laboratory environments.

 

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelors of Science degree in Biology, Microbiology, Chemistry or
related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of five (5) years
of professional experience in a pharmaceutical microbiology laboratory; or an equivalent
combination of training and experience.
