Overview

American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), a membership organization dedicated to the advancement of women's health care in Washington, DC, is currently seeking a Managing Editor who will be responsible for managing the operations of ACOG's monthly journal, Obstetrics & Gynecology; coordinating the efforts of the Editors, Editorial Board, and editorial staff; and serving as the journal's liaison to the commercial publisher.



Responsibilities

  • Coordinate activities with the Editors, Editorial Board, publisher, and ACOG staff: Editors: Advise the Editors in matters of editorial policies and procedures. Coordinate Editor communications and reports to the ACOG Executive Board, journal Editorial Board, readers, reviewers, and authors. Editorial Board: Coordinate the orientation of Board members. Prepare meeting agenda, materials, and minutes for the annual Editorial Board meeting. Provide updates about the journal and special projects as needed. Wolters Kluwer (commercial publisher): Collaborate on special projects to promote and enhance the journal. Oversee page proof review. Monitor system upgrades to the journal website and Editorial Manager and adjust procedures as needed. Monitor Editor-in-Chief review of ads and advise as needed. ACOG staff: Provide regular reports to the Associate Publisher. Compile and report statistics on journal performance for the Editor's report to the Executive Board. Represent the journal at internal and external ACOG activities. Assist in the preparation of the editorial office budget; monitor expenditures.
  • Direct and supervise editorial staff: Establish and evaluate office policies and procedures; update periodically. Hold semi-monthly staff meetings. Monitor production goals and journal statistics. Plan and moderate the annual editorial office retreat.
  • Manage the peer-review process: Maintain editorial policies with regard to the journal and Editorial Board. Update editorial policies as needed based on changes in the field and direction from external groups such as the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors, Council of Science Editors, and Committee on Publication Ethics; educate Editors, authors, reviewers, and staff as needed. Monitor issue content and annual page limitations. Review and edit selected manuscripts for content, consistency, style, and grammar and punctuation. Review page proofs and maintain quality control by evaluating published issues. Participate in the development of style, monitor editorial consistency, and periodically evaluate style issues.
  • Monitor the journal's website and social media channels: Coordinate activities with the publisher and editorial staff. Troubleshoot and transmit problems to publisher for resolution. Monitor the journal's social media sites (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube) and advise on daily posts as needed.
  • The support of the Editors in establishing procedures for processing manuscripts is a key part of the function of the editorial office. The support of the publisher in implementing editorial standards is a major factor contributing to quality control. The support, cooperation, and commitment of the staff are vital in quality control and timeliness.
  • The approval of the authors and Editors is key to incorporating editorial changes acceptable to all parties. The approval of the Editor is required for implementing new editorial policies. The approval of the Associate Publisher is required for financial, staffing, and process issues.
  • Implement editorial style and policies. Evaluate and adjust workflow and process to maximize efficiencies and quality control. Evaluate and realign work priorities.




Qualifications

A 4-year college degree in English, journalism, or related field
35 years of managerial experience
Excellent communication skills and attention to detail
Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite, including expertise with Excel
Experience with web tools and social media
Firm understanding of electronic publishing processes
Demonstrated editorial skills
Familiarity with medical terminology a plus
