Job Summary: The Major Gifts Manager (MGM) works with staff in the development department and across the Gardens to raise critical funding for high priority operating, programmatic and capital projects, including, but not limited to, the elements of the Master Development Plan for Chatfield Farms and endowment gifts. S/he works with the director of development towards meeting the strategic priorities of the organization by managing plans and strategies and by communicating a broad vision with others inside and outside of the organization.

Compensation: $2923.08 - $3192.30 biweekly (annualized $76,000.00 - $83,000.00)

Education/Experience: A minimum five years combination of education and experience in a fund-raising function with a non-profit preferred. Fundraising certification Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) or Advanced Certified Fundraising Executive (ACFRE) and experience with Blackbaud products Raiser's Edge and Research Point a plus. Basic planned giving experience a plus. Must possess excellent human relations, written and spoken communication skills. Demonstrated success in securing donations from individuals and corporations. Experience with capital campaigns preferred. Ability to forge strong working relationships with others and a capacity for engaging confidence and trust among volunteers, prospects and donors. Knowledgeable in trends, laws and demographics related to major gifts preferred. Bachelor of Science (BS) or Bachelor of Arts (BA), preferred. Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office, Outlook and standard office equipment.

Essential Job Duties:

Capital Campaign Management:

  • Joint responsibility for anticipated campaign goal of $25-30 million (March 2021) for the Master Development Plan for Chatfield Farms (with director of development). Goal: to have entire plan funded by the end of calendar year 2024.
  • Manage the capital campaign prospect list for assignment to the CEO, DOD, the MGM and volunteers from identification, education, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Administer regular communications with all staff and volunteers with campaign responsibilities on prospect management, moves, successes and next steps.
  • Personally solicit, alone or in partnership with volunteers or staff, selected prospects.
  • Use database analysis tools and prospect research tools to identify prospective new donors.
  • Collaborate with the Grants Manager and Corporate Partnership Manager to coordinate the research, preparation and writing of proposals for presentation to corporations and foundations.
  • Update prospect and donor activity reports into Raiser's Edge in a timely and comprehensive manner.
  • Prepare progress activity and financial reports.

Contributing Membership management

  • Cultivate, solicit, and steward individual members with membership levels as assigned.
  • Work with other development staff, membership department and capital campaign for all contributing members ($1,250 and above).
  • In coordination with others on the development team, fulfillment of membership benefits at these higher levels, including, but not limited to: Concert benefits, Tickets to ticketed events like Blossoms of Light, Plant Sale Preview Party, and garden consultations.
  • Solicit and document planned gift/bequest intentions from Contributing members, primarily bequest intentions and membership in the legacy society, Perennial Friends.


  • Maintains a portfolio of donor prospects as assigned
  • Manages the portfolio throughout the entire development process: identification, engagement, informing, involvement, solicitation, negotiation and stewardship.

Donor Acknowledgement: Manage the process for timely acknowledgement of gifts; including personal contacts and written acknowledgement.

  • Write acknowledgement letter templates and gift receipts.
  • Plan and implement permanent donor acknowledgement vehicles (donor recognition wall, plaques, named gardens).


  • Plan appropriate cultivation and stewardship events throughout the year for all of the above.
  • Provide support for major development activities; Plant Sale Preview, Fete des Fleurs; Perennial Friends events, Trustees Holiday lunch.
  • Provide staff support for major organizational activities throughout the year including but not limited to plant sales, summer concerts, Pumpkin Fest, Blossoms/Trails of light.

Other Job Duties:

  • Represents the Gardens at civic and community events.
  • Maintains satisfactory working relationships with officers, managers, co-workers and others.
  • Maintains a positive, helpful and solution-oriented demeanor when responding to or serving prospects, donors, members and visitors.
  • Performs other duties as requested by management.
