The TB Discovery Group is looking for a Laboratory Operations Manager to oversee laboratory operations in the drug discovery group. The successful candidate will work in a multi-disciplinary research environment, interacting with chemists, biochemists and microbiologists to provide safety training and support. A large proportion of the work will be conducted under Bio safety Level 3.


Description of Responsibilities:

  • Manage Bio safety Level 2 laboratory operations
  • Manage Bio safety Level 3 facility operations
  • Maintain staff safety records
  • Provide basic safety training for staff
  • Provide comprehensive safety training for bio safety level 3 work with pathogens
  • Provide basic training and supervision for microbiology and molecular biology
  • Assist with laboratory operations for chemistry and robotics laboratories
  • Maintain equipment in good working order
  • Schedule routine equipment maintenance
  • Train staff in use of scientific equipment
  • Maintain and review SOPs pertaining to research
  • Maintain and oversee laboratory inventories
  • Provide safety induction and basic training to staff
  • Oversee exit procedures for departing staff
  • Acquire and maintain CDC ermits
  • Write and maintain IACUC and EMUA records and protocols
  • Approve, assign and track costs and expenditures.
  • Develop costings for grants and contracts
  • Develop costing for equipment repair, maintenance and replacement
  • Contribute freely to the team research environment in a manner conducive to the success of the team as a whole


  • Graduate in relevant biological science
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in a research laboratory setting
  • Laboratory bench skills
  • Experience with BSL2 and BSL3 pathogens
  • Must be self-motivated, organized and be able to work on teams
  • Good communication skills
  • Computer literacy, including word processing, Excel and literature searches
  • Willing to perform wide range of duties in a smaller organization on an  independent level and as a team player.



  • Ability to work with hazardous organisms at BSL3 level
  • Ability to maintain good laboratory records
  • Ability to organize and prioritize own work
  • Ability to take initiative and prioritize tasks; good time-management, problem-prevention, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in collaborative laboratory environment
  • Flexibility in performing multiple tasks.
  • Ability to work accurately with close attention to detail.
  • Ability to work with co-workers and outside agencies professionally and tactfully
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information
  • Willingness to learn new skills
  • Possess a work ethic that includes neatness, punctuality, and accuracy
