Position Purpose

To provide all aspects of direct patron service at the Baker-Berry Library Circulation and Reserves Desks and shares responsibility in varying degrees for other essential departmental tasks.



Skills & Knowledge

Minimum Experience
  • Two to three years relevant library experience preferred and/or customer service experience with a diverse clientele.

This position is scheduled as follows:

Sunday through Thursday from 10pm to 2AM

Employment in this position is contingent upon consent to and successful completion of a pre-employment background check, which may include a criminal background check, reference checks, verification of work history, and verification of any required academic credentials, licenses, and/or certifications, with results acceptable to Dartmouth College. Key Accountabilities
Key Accountabilities

Circulation and Reserves Desk

  • Staffs both public service desks for the Access Services Department performing duties including: charging and discharging material, recalling requested items, initiating overdue notices and bills, collecting and depositing money, verifying and issuing user access privileges; and opening and closing the library.
  • Creates, updates and monitors the accuracy of item records in the integrated library system (Millennium).
  • Interprets and diplomatically enforces library policies and procedures to all patrons.
  • Communicates information to the Hood Museum regarding the Orozco Murals.
  • Serves as staff member responsible for Baker-Berry Library on assigned weekends, evenings, intersessions, and holidays. Monitors building security and contacts Safety and Security should problems arise.

Information Services

  • Responds to a variety of in person, telephone, and email inquiries related to library resources and services.
  • Independently answers research and reference information requests and refers patrons to reference librarians as appropriate.
  • Assists with creation of print, online and digital library marketing and informational materials
  • Assistance with Technology.
  • Assists patrons with access to information resources via laptops, desktop computers, iPads and other mobile devices.
  • Instructs patrons on connecting to information resources from off-campus and how to use scanners, copiers, Greenprint, and other equipment. Resolves minor equipment and software problems, knows when to report issues and confer with specialists as appropriate.

Baker-Berry Access Services Department

  • Attends staff meetings and participates in the development and evaluation of departmental policies, goal setting, procedures and workflow.
  • Participates in training new staff and student assistants.

Specialized Departmental Functions

  • Staff is assigned responsibility for one or more of the departmental functions listed below.
  • Coordinates with faculty to assemble and prepare course reserve materials, including copyright compliance when appropriate.
  • Assists with database maintenance processes to help insure the integrity and accuracy of our catalog records.
  • Evaluates and orders supplies needed for the circulation desk and reserve desk as well as other departmental needs.
