About Family Star: Family Star Montessori School has provided a transformative early childhood education for over 25 years. Just one of a handful of institutions across the country that is both a Montessori school and an Early Head Start/Head Start agency, Family Star fosters holistic programming to children and families.

Family Star's unique nonprofit program operates from two locations in the heart of beautiful Denver, Colorado. Its Montessori program, aligned with the principles and practices of the Association Montessori Internationale, is committed to supporting children and families of all backgrounds and abilities in a language-rich, family-focused, economically diverse environment. With 80% of children and families living below the federal poverty level, the program serves infants, toddlers, and preschoolers from infancy to age six in a year-round, full-day Montessori and Early Head Start/Head Start setting.

Family Star Employment Opportunity: The goal of the Health Advocate position is to assure optimal health for children and families in the Family Star Community. This position is part of a multidisciplinary team that provides comprehensive services for children, families and the community at Family Star according to the standards of Early Head Start/Head Start, Colorado Child Care Licensing, and in accordance with the mission of Family Star.

The Health Advocate will implement and support ongoing health initiatives and other special projects promoting health literacy, equity, and food access. This person is also responsible for providing administrative support for health services and collaborating with the Center Teams and Head Start Team to provide quality health and nutrition services for enrolled children.

Major Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

General Health and Nutrition Services Support

o Provide administrative support with collection and entry of child health data.

o Create reports of child health data and services for ongoing monitoring and program evaluation.

o Collaborate with Center Teams, Teaching staff and Family Services staff to identify and address child health goals.

o Reinforce appropriate health and safety practices, and information in compliance with federal, state and local mandated rules and regulations.

o Provide consultation and support for children with special health or nutrition needs including in the school setting.

o Collaborate with Head Start Team and other teams as needed.

Health Screenings

o Coordinate screenings with community partners

o Provide support for screenings including onsite facilitation, paperwork and data entry.

o Provide support and tracking for follow up on health referrals.

Coordinate Health and Nutrition Program Initiatives

o Coordinate and provide support and direction to Denver Food Rescue Community Leader(s), Family Star volunteers and staff to ensure that food distribution efforts are supported.

o Support health and nutrition education.

o Provide administrative support related to tracking of services as needed for Family Star, grant reporting and partners.

o Collect qualitative and quantitative program usage data for children and families.

o Evaluate services to determine community needs, interests and changes over time and tailor services to changing community needs and update operations accordingly.

Build and Maintain Community Partnerships

o Ensure professional and timely communication with community partners.

o Ensure necessary requirements of participation with community partners are maintained and tracked as needed.

o Build community partnerships with providers of health services and education.

Professional Development

o Participate in team meetings, supervisor check-ins, group and individual reflective sessions.

o Participate in recommended training programs, educational conferences, professional days, staff meetings, and other courses pertinent to professional growth.

o Collaborate with Supervisor to develop and implement professional development plan and goals.

o Demonstrate creative initiative in finding new and better ways to do things and seek to improve the program.

o Maintain confidentiality with children, families and staff at all times.

o Maintain positive work attitude; share information with appropriate persons or supervisor.

o Treat program participants and community members with positive regard and respect.

o Follow ALL policies & procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook or otherwise.

o Maintain and update work plans. o Follow attendance policies and procedures.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum of a high school diploma or GED.

Experience with computers and adept in commonly used software for email, internet, word processing, data collection.

Must be able to work the hours of the position based on the organization's needs

Must be motivated and able to work independently as well as part of a team.

Must demonstrate a positive attitude with a commitment to customer service.

Must have oral and written proficiency in the English language.

Must complete clearance of a background check, post-offer, pre-employment physical, and TB test.

Must be able to travel to locations around the Denver Metro area. Personal vehicle and current drivers' license.

Desired Qualificaitons:

Familiarity with food access initiatives and partners Experience in data collection, entry, tracking and reporting

Experience in the field of infant, and child health or public health

Experience working with children and families of diverse populations

CO Food Handler's Card/Servsafe certification or equivalent food safety training

Proficient in Spanish
