Grants Manager
Employee Status: Full Time w/ Benefits

In 2015 Brilliant Detroit was created to provide a radically new approach to kindergarten readiness in neighborhoods. The idea was to create a unique delivery model in our approach to early childhood development by using underutilized housing stock to create early child and family centers in neighborhoods. Brilliant Detroit homes provide holistic services for kids 0-8 predicated on evidence-based programs around health, family support, and education. Brilliant Detroit was born to create kid success neighborhoods. Today, in each location, neighbors come together for fellowship, activities and learning to assure school readiness, and provide needed support for families.
This work will be done in accordance with the core principles of our Detroit-based non-profit team:
Position Summary:
The primary role of the Grants Manager is to support the growth of Brilliant Detroit, primarily through managing the grant development process. This staff person will be housed in the Stewardship Department and report directly to the Chief of Development and Volunteer Engagement. The focus of this role will be to manage the lifecycle of grants. This means ensuring that each stage of the grant lifecycle research, concept development, writing and editing, and managing is effectively directed toward meeting our fundraising goals and advancing our mission. As part of this, the Development Manager will also be responsible for project management on a variety of projects within the organization.
Experience working in a non-profit and community setting, organization, and timely communication are key traits necessary for this position. Experience with grant writing, evaluation, financial tracking, and database management is also required. The Grants Manager must be a strong communicator, capable of working with programming and administrative staff alike.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Management of the grant development process
- Assistance with directing and completing grant research
- Facilitation of concept development process ensuring input of key stakeholders
- Lead writer on all proposals; this responsibility can be delegated to other team members
- Oversight of management for all accepted grant proposals, including all coordination with relevant staff to ensure timely completion of reporting requirements
- Ensure that funding priorities and opportunities are clearly established and regularly updated to ensure more targeted fund development efforts
- Liaise with other teams and departments within the organization to ensure grant writing is aligned with our mission, responsive to community needs and strengths, and developed in a way that can be practicably implemented
- Once funding for a grant is obtained, assist with further project management or concept development (if needed) and ensure that the relevant program or project is set in motion with key team roles clearly established
- Attend Stewardship Department and lead Fund Development Team meetings; Support the collective work of those bodies, including other fundraising efforts, development of Board of Directors reports, Annual Reports, etc.
- Special initiatives and other duties, as needed
- Participate in training, staff development, committees, and working groups, as needed
Working Conditions
- This position may require evening and weekend work; travel required
Qualifications
- Bachelors Degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
- Minimum of 3 years experience in grant writing, prospect research, and general fundraising.
- One to three years in non-profit or community settings preferred
- Strong written and oral communications skills
- Experience with grant writing, evaluation, financial tracking, and database management
- Ability to coordinate multiple stakeholders and team members around a goal
- Familiarity with project planning and management, as well as program development and implementation
- Experience in program development and implementation
- Knowledge working with governmental funders is a plus.
- Expertise in early childhood development is a plus
- Intermediate to advanced skills with Google drive, social media, and similar programs
- Work with minimal up-front guidance and the ability to take ownership of work product
