This position provides leadership and project direction for very large complex global projects to Project Managers, Engineering Managers, Marketing Product Managers, Engineers, and/or Technicians in the context of Project Management. This position will also provide direct staff management and leadership to a staff of Project Managers or Project Specialists and is accountable for the performance and results of a staff and/or project team within own discipline or function. Additionally, this position will develop program plans for very large, global, complex project(s) with significant financial or strategic impact. The position will also develop departmental plans and priorities to address resource and operational challenges.



  • Provides global leadership and project direction to Project Managers, Engineering Managers, Marketing Product Line Managers, Operations, Engineers, and/or Technicians in the context of Project Management for very large (>$10M annual, >$30M total budget) NPD programs and/or projects
  • Establishes and measures all primary program metrics including schedules, deliverables, budgets, costs and risks
  • Serves as core team leader of program responsible for team communications and organization for Engineering, Marketing, Operations, Project Management, and other functions of the organization, globally
  • Works closely with Engineering Managers to insure all project teams are properly resourced and have clear goals and requirements and understand the short and long term goals
  • Aligns customer requirements for all projects under the program umbrella, including legacy products
  • Aligns project milestones to insure overall program timeliness and cohesion
  • Serves as an effective leader, facilitator and coach for the Project Specialists, Engineers, and/or Engineering Technician
  • Effectively communicates information (both technical and administrative) to staff and senior management on an ongoing basis
  • Collaborates with direct reports to establish development goals and plans. Creates learning opportunities and monitors progress towards these goals. Ensures that employee development process is continuous
  • Resolves conflict through open discussion or mediation. Fairly applies disciplinary process, if necessary
  • Seeks opportunities to better understand the organizations global approach, including strengths & weaknesses that are likely to affect the organizations ability to compete globally
  • Determines courses of action that influence long-range department and organizational goals
  • Leads a Project Management Community of Practice, with the goal of establishing common best-practice methodology, improving time-to-market, product reliability and performance, and project launch date and cost-target promises
  • Identifies and implements improvement plans that assist and enable functions outside of Engineering to better support the NPD process


Special knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

  • A successful track record and proven ability to manage and leading NPD efforts from concept through complete life cycle on large global programs and/or projects
  • Excellent team-building skills with proven ability to utilize appropriate methods and interpersonal styles to develop, motivate, and guide management and the team to attain successful outcomes and business objectives
  • Proven ability to collaborate with associates at all levels of MSA, and in all regions
  • Proven track record in developing and launching new products on time and under budget while meeting or exceeding customer requirements
  • Strong focus on customer fulfillment, with ability to support driving tasks to completion to ensure on-time delivery of new MSA products while meeting or exceeding customer expectations.
  • Demonstrated ability to coach and develop associates by providing feedback, instruction and developmental guidance to help associates excel
  • Proven track record of sharing authority and responsibilities with others to move decision making and accountability downward through the organization.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills

Education and Experience Required:

  • Bachelors degree in appropriate discipline required, preferably from an ABET accredited program required
  • Project Management certification (PMP) required
  • Minimum of 11 years Project Management / Engineering experience, including Project Manager role on 5 platform (or equivalent) projects
  • Experience with Scrum and Agile methodology
  • Experience with the design and development of safety products and gas detection equipment, product design for harsh environments, industrial design, wireless data applications, and with industry standards certification processes
  • Experience with voice-of-customer collection and implementation
  • Experience using WIKI/Confluence and Planisware
  • MS degree may be substituted for up to 2 years of relevant experience

Education and Experience Preferred:

  • Program Management certification (PgMP) preferred
  • MBA/MS/PhD preferred
  • Minimum of 2 years direct management experience
