Executive Director, Manufacturing Strategies and Technologies

The Executive Director of Manufacturing Strategies and Technologies is responsible for establishing and leading the Global Manufacturing Strategy, advancing opportunities for building and expanding manufacturing capabilities, and driving critical programs such as the company cross-functional cost of sales initiative and global expansion. Reporting to the Senior Vice President (SVP) of Manufacturing, this role is a member of the Manufacturing Leadership Team (MLT) and works closely with cross-functional leaders from across Operations and Amgen to advance Manufacturing strategy and competitiveness. This role acts as a critical thought partner with the SVP of Manufacturing, creating, translating and executing the global Manufacturing strategy.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead the development and implementation of the Global Manufacturing Strategy, including embedding future-state Manufacturing capabilities
  • Lead the cross functional analysis, business case, planning and execution for establishing Manufacturing capabilities beyond current locations and capabilities
  • Lead cross-functional cost of sales (COS) initiative, inclusive of company-wide and Operations on-going productivity efforts
  • Leverage data and analytics to inform business strategies and decisions
  • Partner cross functionally to drive digital integration and predictive technologies across the Amgen manufacturing network
  • Responsible for the organizational processes and rhythm to ensure that Manufacturing delivers on commitments and continually is focused on driving strategic direction reviews
  • Partner with VP Site Heads and manufacturing sites to align deliverables, metrics capture, and alignment on value creation related to the Manufacturing Strategy
  • Participate in the global Plant Manager Network
  • Serve as key Manufacturing Executive partner with Global Supply Chain, Process Development, Quality, Engineering, and Manufacturing Sites
  • Drive clarity and alignment in terms of identifying the Manufacturing network's needs, and ensure we are driving the right solutions
  • Accountable for developing effective strategies for technology deployment and alignment across Manufacturing
  • Create and drive a global governance structure as we decide what solutions and technologies are needed, and ensure effective deployment across sites
  • Partner with Manufacturing Finance lead to educate on and translate functional priorities and business details related to financials. Partner on data and visualization appropriate for audience and oversight of organizational shape and budget


Basic Qualifications:

  • Doctorate degree & 6 years of Manufacturing Strategy experience OR
  • Master's degree & 10 years of Manufacturing Strategy experience OR
  • Bachelor's degree & 12 years of Manufacturing Strategy experience AND
  • 6 years of managerial experience directly managing people and/or leadership experience leading teams, projects, programs or directing the allocation of resources


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Direct experience leading significant strategy development & implementation
  • Demonstrated skills in partnering with and influencing executive leadership as well as different functions and levels of the organization
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and executive presence, including ability to story line and prepare executive-level presentations and pre-reads
  • Adapting and thriving in a rapidly changing and fast-moving environment
  • Independent, motivated and proactive executive team member with experience in a matrix-ed, highly fluid environment
  • Established analytical capabilities and the ability to integrate complex data
  • Ability to foster collaboration, work effectively on cross-functional teams and consistently deliver on-time while serving as a role model for Amgen values and leadership attributes
  • Ability to gather disparate information and develop into executive ready materials
  • Ability to operate at different altitudes, driving global strategy and when needed solving immediate issues.
  • Direct experience in a cross-functional business operations or strategic project management role
  • In depth understanding of Manufacturing and Operations within Life Sciences industry
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders and supporting functions (e.g. Human Resources, Finance)
  • Financial acumen and ability to interpret and communicate financial information
  • Models good decision-making behaviors and reinforces proper decision making and meeting management according to the company decision making framework
  • Able to excel in a matrix-ed organization, and possess strategic thinking and sound project management skills
