Under general direction from the Chief Engineer, the Engineering Supervisor assists in directing the engineering departments operations, preplanning of preventive maintenance, and supervises and directs engineering personnel in installation, repair, and maintenance of all mechanical and electrical equipment along with building envelope, systems and components. May also perform or direct installation of electric and utilities for event related activities. This position may require working varying days and shift times including holidays and weekends. In the absence of the Chief Engineer, the Engineering Supervisor will assume Chief Engineer responsibilities and may receive functional event related instructions from the Event Manager(s), or general instructions from the Director of Operations or Assistant General Manager.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains a safe, secure, pleasant environment for clients, visitors, and co-workers. Follows Duke Energy Convention Center policies and procedures, applicable codes and safety regulations.
  • Schedule, supervise and direct engineering staff and monitor performance of assigned responsibilities.
  • Operates Building Control Systems for the purpose of controlling space temperature and lighting.
  • Perform and/or direct the performance of all engineering departmental service requests, ensuring that work performed is accomplished efficiently with a minimum amount of disruption and inconvenience. Check malfunctioning equipment and ascertain corrective action required to restore to satisfactory operating condition.
  • Performs regular inspections of building spaces to assess maintenance and repair needs.
  • Leads or directly operates and monitors critical and non-critical system equipment and components. Oversees work efforts (including 3rd party contractors) for the safe and compliant operation, maintenance (corrective and preventive), and modification of equipment.
  • Provide training and supervision aimed at expanding the capabilities of the engineering staff. Specific duties include, but not limited to: Demonstrating the proper use and care of tools and instruments, giving hands on instruction in basic maintenance, safety, and troubleshooting procedures, recommending relevant outside training courses for enrollment and instilling an overall level of professionalism in manner and appearance.
  • Supervise and implement the DECC maintenance program. Specific duties include but are not limited to: scheduling of preventive and corrective maintenance with a minimum disruption of building services, performing and/or delegating maintenance tasks to the appropriately qualified maintenance staff member, orders parts and equipment required for repair, maintenance and installation of new equipment and facilities, and maintains inventory. Performs or verifies all required documentation is complete and current for work orders, plant operations, safety tests and inspections.
  • Respond immediately to emergency situations (fire, evacuation, equipment failure, etc.) and customer concerns.
  • Insure the availability of an adequate operating inventory of tools and supplies. Specific duties include, but not limited to: Preparing and submitting purchase-order requests, developing sources for stock materials and performing periodic checks for supplies.
  • Provide general information, directions and assistance to facility guests
  • Promotes energy conservation in plant operations and work activities.
  • Performs plant operations, physical plant rounds, routines, and documentation.
  • Assists in development of standardized maintenance and repair processes for department.
  • Assists Chief Engineer in development of department operating and capital budget recommendations.



Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • 5+ years related work experience, including supervisory experience.
  • At least 3+ years of experience working in a commercial or institutional facility (i.e. public venues, hospitals, arenas, stadiums, convention centers)

Education / Training:

  • High school diploma, or equivalent GED
  • Professional certification preferred. (AFE / IFMA / BOMA)

Licenses or Certificates:

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain a CPR certificate and AED certificate
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain a driver's license

Special Characteristics / Knowledge Base:

  • Working knowledge of relevant fire code and OSHA safety regulations
  • Working knowledge of relevant federal, state, and local regulations
  • Extensive knowledge of HVAC components and controls, electrical systems, and general building repair, operations and maintenance.
  • Must have basic computer skills in Microsoft office applications and word processing, spreadsheets, database, presentation, and internet software.
  • Ability to work from elevated surfaces, such as ladders and lifts.
  • Ability to work effectively in a service-oriented environment subject to frequently changing priorities
  • Ability to work well both independently and as part of a team; must have a positive attitude.
  • Ability to analyze challenges, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions and make recommendations for improvement to Engineering Management; implement approved recommendations in support of organizational objectives.
  • Ability to develop plans, specifications and drawings for projects and tasks related to areas of expertise.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, contractors and facility users, as well as local, state and federal code enforcement personnel
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in the English language, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including early mornings, days, evenings, overnight, weekends, holidays, extended (long) work days and extended numbers of days.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively, within general guidelines.
  • Ability to use required tools and equipment skillfully and safely.
  • Ability to create, work from and interpret documents such as drawings, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out general and involved written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to perform general shop math to calculate cost, ratio, proportions, surfaces, volumes, weights and measures.
