OVERVIEW: At Handicare, we strive to make everyday life easier for our customers. As a leading manufacturer and distributor of Patient Care / Patient Handling products, Handicare designs, engineers, and builds products to help the safe transfer and safe movement of users in hospital care, long-term care, as well as in-home care. Handicare Internships provide students with valuable exposure to our industry, our products, and our processes. Our program provides candidates pursuant of an Engineering Bachelors Degree the opportunity to learn about the field they may one day work within. The Engineering Intern will aid in development and improvement implementations to production, engineering, and R&D processes that lead to a safer environment, higher quality, and lower cost product. This position will involve hands-on interaction with electromechanical devices and frequent interaction with production, engineering, and quality team members.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Investigate and implement improvement projects, Engineering Change Requests, Document Change Orders, and other assigned projects to improve Handicare quality and efficiencies.
- Create and modify documents that instruct the shop floor on basic procedures for assembling products.
- Deploy modern lean manufacturing techniques.
- Ensures that products and components conform to engineering design, FDA and ISO regulatory requirements, and performance specifications.
- Additional responsibilities as requested or required by management.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

- Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedural manuals or government regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from group of managers, or other team members.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & TRAINING:
- High School Diploma or
- Sophomore, Junior, or Senior Pursuant of Bachelors Degree (B.A. / B.S.) from a four-year college or university in mechanical engineering, industrial engineering/technology, or similar degree.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES OR REGISTRATIONS:
- None are required.
EXPERIENCE / SKILLS:
- Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook is recommended.
- Intermediate proficiency in SolidWorks or similar CAD Design software is required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The employee may occasionally stand, walk, stoop, kneel or crouch during shift. Employee will be required to regularly sit, use hand to finger, handle, feel and reach with hands and arms. Employee must be able to occasionally lift, push, pull and or move up to 50 lbs.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- This position works in an environment with moderate noise levels.
TRAVEL:
- This position may travel to local supplier or customer sites (1-2 travel occurrences during internship)
