We collect and analyze the data from those experiments with some of the most powerful computers in the world. We conduct this research on a 6,800-acre prairie, 35 miles outside Chicago, a treasure that has been designated a National Environmental Research Park.

Fermilab's Facilities Engineering Services Sections (FESS) seeks an Engineering Department Head. FESS employs integrated teams to accomplish a broad array of tasks, supporting infrastructure comparable to a small city, managing projects ranging from a few thousand to hundreds of millions of dollars, tracking personal and real property, coordinating with subcontractors, and administering day-to-day activities of an organization with a $25M annual budget. The incumbent will be responsible for managing Fermilab's in-house architecture and engineering team and portfolio of projects. The Department Head will also lead or participate in major, complex, high level engineering projects. You Will:
  • Develop overall business strategies and administer day-to-day operations of the Engineering Department of the Facilities Engineering Services Section, including development and management of staff, budget, and business processes
  • Build, lead, and scale a high-quality architecture and engineering team, and demonstrate a passion to recruit, mentor and develop top talent
  • Coordinate workload and staff resources to optimize responsiveness and deliver the team's portfolio of projects within scope, schedule, and cost estimates
  • Establish and maintain productive relationships and effective communication with clients, vendors, sub-contractors and other stakeholders
  • Coordinate business strategy with other department heads and support other departments in completing multidisciplinary deliverables
  • Develop specifications, designs, and documents for high level, technically complex, highly visible engineering projects
  • Represent the section in formal and informal relationships with internal and external customers

We Are Looking For:
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or architecture
  • Professional Engineer (PE) or Licensed Architect in the State of Illinois
  • 10+ years relevant industry experience including advanced engineering or architecture design and project experience
  • 3+ years managing a team of employees
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or similar certification/experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Department of Energy 413.3 Program & Project Management
  • Experience with Federal High Performance Sustainable Building Guiding Principles
  • Adept at establishing solid working relationships and developing peer or matrixed organizations to accomplish cross-organizational goals
  • Accomplished oral and written communicator
