Purpose of Position: 


This position of Director, Public Policy and Advocacy is responsible for assisting the President and the Vice President in achieving United Way of Greater Clevelands (UWGC) strategic public policy mission. Lead and direct public policy advocacy efforts; increase awareness about United Ways public policy advocacy agenda with volunteers, health and human service area, corporate partners, local, state and national government to help execute strategic advocacy platform.  


 


Duties and Responsibilities: 


Essential Job Functions




  • Inform and provide strategic foresight and guidance to senior leadership about relevant policy developments and opportunities. 

  •  Position UWGC with policymakers as a credible, trusted, nonpartisan source of information. 

  • Represent UWGC directly with federal, state, and local policymakers, as directed by executive vice president. 

  •  Inform and coordinate policy engagement of organization staff and assist members with questions regarding current public policy issues.

  • Directly advocate UWGC public policy advocacy platform and priorities with federal, state and local elected officials and staff on public policy issues important to UWGC as needed. Advocacy activities may include testifying at public hearings, meeting one-on-one and developing official correspondence. 

  •  Direct and guide the public policy advocacy activities of the organization through the development of background materials, interaction with elected officials and key constituencies, including participation in coalitions, and communication with other lobbying organizations and individuals. 

  • Manage the bi-annual development of the Public Policy Advocacy Agenda. 

  • Lead the development and strategic deployment of public policy programs and resources.  

  • Manage public policy program budget. 

  • Monitor business related issues and proposals at all levels. 

  •  Establish and maintain effective working relationships with elected officials/staff, business leaders, lobbyists, and business/community organizations. 

  • Participate in internal committees and groups.  

  • Support the execution of the UWGC strategic plan in helping to advance organization-wide goals and priorities.  

  • Help implement, develop, and support board-level public policy subcommittee, including preparation of meeting materials. 

  •  Directs strategies and tactics to influence the wider business communitys public policy agenda in ways that advance UWGCs mission.  

  • Work closely with Marketing & Communications and Community Impact Departments on advocacy strategies for each community impact priorities and help executive community impact strategy maps advocacy strategies.







Qualifications



  • Required Education and Experience: 




  • Bachelors degree essential (ex. Political Science, Business, Journalism/Mass Communications); advanced degree in related field (law, business or public policy) preferred. 




  • 5+ years experience of direct experience working on policy issues in government, the corporate policy world, think tanks, public interest groups, public affairs and/or government relations in Ohio and/or federal level of government 

  • Equivalent combination of education, experience and training that provides the knowledge and abilities to do the job. 

  • Non-profit knowledge and experience a plus, but not required.




  • Preferred Education and Experience: 

  • Masters preferred.

  • Working conditions are normal for an office environment which includes but not limited to the following:  

  • Ability and means to travel on a flexible schedule as needed, proof of liability and property damage insurance on vehicle used is required. 




  • Some local travel/occasional overnight travel 

  • Occasionally required to stand walk; sit; use hands to fingers; hand or feel objects; tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. 

  • Employees may need to occasionally lift up to 25 lbs. 

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually minimal
