As part of the Amgen's Manufacturing Operations organization, our Amgen Woburn Manufacturing (AWM) site manufactures oncolytic virus based end-to-end drug substance and drug products for the global market. As such we continuously strive to be a leader in flawless execution to ensure we deliver our medicines to every patient, every time. This role of Director of Engineering for AWM reports directly to the AWM Site Head and indirectly to our Amgen Global Head of Engineering. In this role, the incumbent has responsibility for leading the AWM Facilities, Engineering, and Automation (FE&A) function in Woburn, MA, and participates on the Amgen Global Engineering Team.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Provide organizational leadership of the local FE&A team. Oversee FE&A talent management, including performance, career development, and succession planning
  • Furnish technical expertise to assess emerging industry trends and partner with vendors to determine innovative opportunities to improve reliability, efficiency, agility, and differentiation
  • Lead the FE&A Operational Excellence program and its execution
  • Develop short/long term strategies, goals, objectives, and associated budgets required to ensure appropriate FE&A and site execution
  • Develop and implement supporting metrics to track and manage successful accomplishment of assigned goals, objectives and projects, along with appropriate countermeasure when necessary
  • Manage our capital portfolio including project prioritization
  • Optimize all asset lifecycle management for AWM, from the realization that an asset is needed to its eventual disposal after decommissioning. This includes but in not limited to engineering and design work required, identification and acquisition of capital and expense needed, sourcing, construction, installation, testing, commissioning, and maintenance.
  • Plan, design, and start-up of process equipment and systems as well as technical support for ongoing operations and maintenance of installed systems and equipment
  • Own the overall maintenance of our facilities and the required internal and external suppliers for it
  • Foster and maintain relationships with key site and network stakeholders

Maintenance, Calibration & Utilities:
  • Oversee all Utility System Owners for clean utilities, plant utilities, HVAC, and electrical infrastructure, instrumentation program and Analytical Equipment System Owners
  • Ensure mechanical maintenance, maintenance engineering, maintenance planning & scheduling process
  • Accountable for monitoring, analysing and trending system performance

  • Application Development and Automation Infrastructure (reliability, maintenance, etc.)

Process Equipment Engineering:
  • Oversight of all Process Equipment System Owners in AWM facilities
  • Refresh Asset Care and Maintenance strategic plan to optimize system reliability and lifecycle cost; assess predictive technologies for implementation

Basic Qualifications :
  • Doctorate degree and 4 years of experience in an Engineering discipline or a technical Manufacturing operations leadership field, preferably in the Pharmaceutical and/or Biotech industry
  • OR
  • Master's degree and 8 years of experience in an Engineering discipline or a technical Manufacturing operations leadership field, preferably in the Pharmaceutical and/or Biotech industry
  • OR
  • Bachelor's degree and 10 years of experience in an Engineering discipline or a technical Manufacturing operations leadership field, preferably in the Pharmaceutical and/or Biotech industry
  • AND
  • Minimum 4 years of managerial experience directly managing people in a multi-tiered organization and/or leadership experience leading teams, projects, programs or directing the allocation of resources

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience providing technical support to manufacturing facilities
  • Strong leadership experience and aptitude with demonstrated ability to effectively lead and partner in a complex, matrix environment
  • Proven experience and track record of compliance in a highly regulated GMP environment
  • Diverse operations experience preferably in the manufacture of biologics with aseptic processing, drug substance and/or drug products focus
  • Operational Excellence mindset with diverse, and profound Continuous Improvement methodology experience (e.g., Lean, Six Sigma, Total Quality Management (TQM), etc.)

  • Communications skills, both oral and written, including executive presentation skills
  • Interpersonal and facilitation skills necessary to forge consensus among competing client interests while ensuring objectives are met

  • Analytical skills to identify potential improvement opportunities
  • Knowledge of industry trends (e.g., regulatory and compliance, technology, human performance programs, sustainability, etc.)
