Job Description:

Amherst College invites applications for the Database Engineer position. The Database Engineer is a full-time, year-round position, job group and level PT-5. Under the supervision of the Director of Advancement Reporting & Systems, the Database Engineer manages Advancement Reporting & Systems' efforts to structure Advancement's data in a well-organized and easy-to-access manner for usage for reporting and by applications. The Database Engineer recommends and implements database solutions that support Advancement's mission to connect alumni and parents to Amherst College through fundraising, in-person and online events, and volunteering. The Database Engineer leads the migration of data from our legacy database and SQL Server reporting warehouse to the new Slate database. The Database Engineer is responsible for the redesign and rebuild of the reporting warehouse project.

Summary of duties and responsibilities:

Database Engineering
  • Design, develop, and maintain data structures in SQL Server reporting warehouse and Slate CRM.
  • Responsible for managing projects such as the transition of data from legacy reporting warehouse and Colleague database into new Slate CRM and new reporting warehouse.
  • Leads redesign and/or rebuild of SQL Server / MySQL tables with an eye to optimizing performance and maximizing functionality for end-users. Maintains reporting warehouse and provides advice on data structures for emerging needs, including balancing what reporting will be handled out of Slate versus the reporting warehouse.
  • Lends expertise in decision-making regarding data structures to support operational, historical, and analytical reporting needs.
  • Works with colleagues across campus on data feeds into and out of Advancement systems and other campus databases.
  • Provides support to a diverse clientele, including off-hours / on-call support.

Report migration, development, and support
  • Collaborate in maintaining and migrating to new Slate CRM the suite of over 100 reports currently delivered thru SSRS, Excel, email, Access, and web applications.
  • Implement reporting and business intelligence solutions delivered thru various mechanisms including online, mobile, web service, and email. Develop in Slate, SSRS, Excel, and emerging applications as needed.

Application migration, development, and support
  • Partner with colleagues in Reporting & Systems on the migration of legacy applications into the new Slate CRM.
  • Help determine dependencies in reporting warehouse for old applications and which applications can be directly integrated into Slate versus having to hang off the warehouse.
  • Work with end-users on application specifications. Responsible for end-to-end development, including testing, deployment, and maintenance.

  • Bachelor's Degree or 5-7 years of experience in lieu of degree
  • 5-7 years of related experience.
  • Technology: SQL Server and advanced knowledge of SQL.
  • High level of knowledge of database architecture and experience with conversions.
  • Strong organizational, time management, and written and verbal communication skills.
  • High level of attention to detail, accuracy, thoroughness, and organizational skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills - ability to collaborate and work effectively with a wide range of personalities and levels (from technical to gift officers to Department Heads to admin staff).
  • Ability to work independently and/or work well with a team depending on the situation.
  • Comfortable learning and incorporating new technologies.
  • Ability to synthesize information and set/suggest policy.
  • Commitment to excellence and quality, appreciation of customer service.
  • Focus on continuous improvement.
  • Commitment to or experience working with a diverse community.
  • 7+ years of related experience.
  • Experience working in the field of Advancement and/or knowledge of fundraising and alumni relations best practices, as related to database management and reporting.
  • Technology: MySQL, Access, VBA. Familiarity with PHP, Laravel, CakePHP, AWS a plus.
