  • Works from charge sheets or verbal instructions and by hand, rake or shovel loads prescribed amounts of coke and flux into gas powered and/or manual wheelbarrow.

  • Manually pushes or guides wheelbarrow to weigh scales and weighs charge material to meet prescribed quantity.

  • Pushes material to charge bucket and dumps charge material into jib bucket for charging cupola.

  • Makes any change in amount of coke or flux as directed by supervisor.

  • Do not overfill Cupola.

  • Check coke scale.

  • Check that the Charging Bucket is operating properly by running bucket up to the charge doors and back down. Make sure there are no hang-ups in the track or doors. Visually check cable to be sure it is in good condition.

  • Check charge make-up log.

  • Load C100lbs of limestone on the coke bed.

  • Check that scrap metal weight is correct.

  • Transfers scrap metal from scale to charging bucket by raising Scale Bucket and dumping scrap carefully into Charging Bucket. If over 75 lbs, have crane operator pick up or use coke bucket air hoist.

  • Inspect charge for non-ferrous metals (aluminum, brass, lead, etc). Take non-ferrous materials out of charge and segregate them.

  • Push in power switch to shut power off to charge bucket.

  • Check for scrap on the wheels of Charging Bucket. Make sure scrap is completely inside the bucket and will not fall out.

  • Make sure all Team Members are clear of Charging Bucket, pull out power switch to turn power on to charge bucket, and then send scrap up to charge doors.

  • Check bucket after it is brought down that it is empty. If not, rearrange scrap and send it back up to unload.

  • Check that coke weight is proper by reading digital readout scale. Coke weight will correspond with the one on the makeup log. +/- 20lbs.

  • Transfer coke to the Charging Bucket. Move the coke bucket over to charging bucket with air hoist and open bottom to dump the coke. Limestone can be weighed together with coke for a short period of time.

  • Weigh limestone according to log by reading digital read out scale. +/-20lbs. Transfer it to the top of the coke and add one (1) charge to the counter. Return bucket to loading area and refill with coke.

  • Make sure all Team Members are clear of charging bucket, and then send coke/limestone up to the charge doors.

  • One charge equals two 2900-3100lbs. Scrap loads and one (1) coke/limestone load

  • Keep alloys stacked to avoid running out. Notify pay loader operator before you run out of coke or limestone.

  • Keep Cupola area clean.

  • Check iron weight scale. Make sure all pivots are on and scale moves freely.

  • Be aware of overhead crane at all times.

  • Charge coke boosters when instructed

  • When Cupola is full or off, check scrap pile for non-ferrous metals. Remove them so they cannot be charged into Cupola.

  • Check Cupola capacity and make sure it is full.

  • Observe any smoke at charge doors or Baghouse. Call the supervisor or leadman to correct problem.

  • Check Cupola bottom doors for hot spots. If any are found, call Cupola supervisor or leadman immediately.

  • Perform additional duties as directed by leadman/supervisor.

  • At the end of the day and/or when Cupola is shutdown, clean charging bucket pit by removing pieces of scrap and debris that has fallen into the pit during the day. It may be necessary to clean the pit during production if scrap prevents proper operation of the charging bucket.

  • On Thursdays, assist with bottom drop preparation, drop and cleanup.

  • Pick up coke and/or limestone on the ground and place in proper container or area.

  • Cleans excess dirt from charging material to assist in maintain proper iron consistency.

  • Responsible for hooking and unhooking jib crane line to charge bucket.

  • Unloads coke from railroad cars by hand as required.

  • Prepares pig beds by use of shovel, wheelbarrow and/or pay loader on tap-out day so that Cupola may be emptied and necessary repairs made. (reword add hopper)

  • Cleans scrap from underneath and around Cupola.

  • Keeps scales and work area clean and orderly.

  • Performs other miscellaneous duties as required.

  • Qualifications

    1. Ability to stand for up to 10 hours per day.

    2. Ability to work in extreme temperatures hot/cold.

    3. Must wear proper PPE such as, goggles, ear plugs, hard-hat, and boots.

    4. Must be able to follow instructions from supervisor.

    5. Loads and dumps coke and flux in charge bucket for charging cupola.

    6. Requires some raw material knowledge pertaining to Cupola charging operations.

    7. Requires the ability to work from detailed instructions and the making of minor decisions in dumping the proper amount of coke and flux in charge bucket and making necessary changes in amount of coke or flux as directed.

    8. Continuous physical exertion required in loading wheelbarrow by hand or shovel, manually pushing or operating gas powered wheelbarrow and unloading wheelbarrow into charge buckets.

    9. Continuous mental and visual attention required in obtaining desired weight of charge materials into charge bucket and operating gas powered equipment.
