Job Description:

The Communications, Outreach & Events Specialist is a key member of the Boren Awards team, working closely with team members to promote and support this unique program for US undergraduate and graduate students interested in languages and regions of the world that are critical to US national security, and who are committed to public service. This is a highly visible role that requires frequent interaction with university partners, potential applicants, and the sponsor, serving as the first point of contact and primary public facing representative. The Communications, Outreach & Events Specialist leads overall Boren outreach and communications strategy, conducts outreach and recruitment activities, and also represents IIE on panels, presentations and other events. They lead the planning and implementation of major Boren Awards events as well as roundtables, focus groups, and events with the Boren Alumni Ambassadors. They work closely with the Boren team to compile and analyze program data for projects and events, driving creative and innovative improvements.

Essential Functions:

  • Develops and implements a detailed, comprehensive, and targeted outreach and recruitment strategy plan in consultation with team and subject to approval prior to implementation. Serves as first point of contact in new outreach initiatives.
  • Accountable for recruitment strategy implementation. Recruits and serves as direct point of contact for potential applicants interested in a variety of programs.
  • Responsible for event planning and execution of major Boren events including the pre-departure orientation.
  • Develops, maintains, and supports key contacts at partner institutions, especially Boren Campus Representatives. Interacts with institutions of higher education, scholarly associations and, as needed, other external constituencies, including vendors, consultants, and contractors, to professionally represent IIE.
  • Identify data driven solutions and continually identifies areas of improvement to outreach efforts and event programming.
  • Plans and implements outreach programming in collaboration with the Boren team and other IIE programs and university partners as applicable.
  • Tracks, monitors, and supports production and distribution of outreach materials and information. Ensures correct brand usage in creation of all materials.

The Institute of International Education ("IIE") has a hybrid work environment that allows team members a combination of in-office work and telework at any of the locations listed above.

Job Requirements:

Education and Work Experience:

  • Requires a Bachelor's degree in order to apply a working knowledge of the theories and principles in a specialized field or work discipline.
  • Requires at least five years of related work experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Strong understanding of scholarship and fellowship advising on college campuses as well as study abroad or language and culture programming for outbound US students.
  • Experience in an outreach and recruitment role and ability to demonstrate judgement and be comfortable in a client-facing role.
  • Demonstrated experience designing and implementing high profile online and in-person events. Familiarity or experience with pre-departure orientations or large-scale events a plus.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, public speaking, and presentation skills. Superior writing and editing skills.
  • Demonstrated project management, time management, and administrative skills with strong attention to detail and ability to adhere to project budgets.
  • Ability to interact with all levels of team members and clients, including the ability to work with students, partner organizations, and institutions.
  • Broad knowledge of Microsoft Office programs and social media platforms.
