REPORTS TO: Site Coordinator

SALARY RANGE: $27,600-$30,527 (annually). Excellent benefits including medical, dental, vision, prescription, life insurance, 401K plan, employee referral bonus and 24 paid vacation days per year, personal and sick days. Sign-on bonus of $3,000.

JOB SUMMARY: This position serves as an Assistant Teacher for a Grand Street Settlement Early Childhood classroom. The Assistant Teacher will work collaboratively with the Teacher to ensure the successful operation of a classroom with a total of 15 children. The Assistant Teacher also works with a team of other classroom teachers and family members to implement the curriculum to achieve outcomes for children of all abilities.


  • Candidate must be at least 18 years old.
  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) required; AAS in Early Childhood Education; BA/BS in Early Childhood Education preferred.
  • Complete 2-Hours Child Abuse and maltreatment identification, reporting and prevention training as well as the requirements of applicable statutes and regulations.
  • Obtain DOE fingerprinting and pass comprehensive background check.
  • Hold a valid Teaching Assistant Level 1 certification or higher NYS Teaching Assistant Certification or complete Teaching Assistant Level 1 certification within one year of hire.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of previous teaching experience preferred.
  • Basic computer literacy in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and Google Email preferred.
  • Obtain CPR and First Aid certification within the first year of employment preferred.

The Assistant Teachers responsibilities chiefly fall within the following core functions, although s/he may perform other tasks as needed:

  1. Child Growth & Development: Implements a child-centered curriculum and learning environment that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation to promote development in all domains for children of all abilities.
  2. Planning: Responsible for collaborating with the Lead Teacher in the preparation of daily lesson plans
  3. Program Implementation: Provide positive guidance and redirection to support children as they acquire readiness skills for kindergarten and beyond
  4. Family Partnerships: Encourage parent participation in staff-parent conferences and home visits discussing their childs development and education
  5. Communication and Service Coordination: Maintain regular contact with parents and complete appropriate documentation; Direct developmental concerns to the Health, Nutrition and Disabilities Coordinator
  6. Record Keeping and Reporting: Request supplies as needed and participate in classroom/program inventory as requested
  7. On-going Monitoring and Self-Assessment: Work with teaching team to analyze child outcomes on a classroom basis twice yearly
  8. Complete lesson Plans, do daily observations of children writing anecdotes, Implement and do Teaching Strategies Gold.
