The Safety Pharmacology and Animal Resource Center (SPARC) is seeking an experienced veterinary technician that will focus on training program coordination and veterinary care management. As an Associate Scientist at Amgen, will be part of a dynamic team charged with managing all aspects of animal health care for a multi-species research colony. Will provide strong clinical support to animals from multiple therapeutic areas used for in vivo studies and assist in providing training to animal users. In addition, the Associate Scientist will provide technical assistance on studies to investigators within the SPARC organization. Specific responsibilities include:
  • Leading clinical case triage, documenting health information in animal medical records and providing follow-up and treatment for a variety of species including USDA regulated species under the direction of the site veterinarian.
  • Performing and assisting with anesthesia of laboratory animal species, technical manipulations and specialized post-operative care.
  • Assisting in clinical care guidance document creation, review and revision.
  • Communicating with investigators on animal health cases.
  • Implementing laboratory animal care guidelines and regulations
  • Assisting with AnimalHealth Surveillance and Environmental Enrichment Programs.
  • Scheduling and documenting training events and competency assessments.
  • Assisting in training manual development, review and revision.
  • Developing education programs for trainers and competency assessors.
  • Managing SPARC e-learning training modules and IACUC requirements, training protocols, animal ordering and supply management.
  • Conducting training and competency assessments.
  • Providing innovation/opportunities for technique refinement and new techniques.
  • Serving as a training liaison between Amgen and external SPARC partners for operations and technical training.
  • Assisting with on-boarding new hires and C-CAR in vivo users.
  • Handling, dosing and blood collection of animals on study.
  • Providing anesthesia and post-operative support of study animals.
  • Performing other specialized techniques based on study designs.


Basic Qualifications

Master's degree and 2 years of in vivo experience

OR

Bachelor's degree and 4 years of in vivo experience

Preferred Qualifications
  • Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) certification
  • AALAS certification at the LATG level and/or other laboratory animal certifications.
  • Previous clinical experience conducting animal research.
  • Experience conducting hands-on training.
  • Master's degree in animal science or related field.
  • Strong leadership, written/verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Self-motivated, able to work independently and highly organized with a strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to handle multiple and changing priorities and work load.
  • High proficiency with basic and advanced techniques (dosing, blood collection) for multiple species.
  • Working knowledge of The Guide, USDA regulations, AAALAC and veterinary best practices.
