PURPOSE OF THE JOB:


The Associate, Human Rights Accountability will support the organizations work focused on ensuring that the U.S. government respects its human rights obligations and promotes those of other governments. Working under the direction of the Senior Vice President for Policy and in coordination with other Human Rights First staff, the Associate, Human Rights Accountability will focus primarily on growing and strengthening the work of Human Rights Firsts worldwide Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act (GMA) network, which focuses on the use of targeted sanctions to hold human rights violators and corrupt actors accountable for their actions.


MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:



  • Assist in Human Rights First's efforts to promote and facilitate the use of targeted human rights and anti-corruption sanctions under the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act and similar legal authorities, including by working with representatives of other civil society groups, U.S. departments and agencies, and foreign governments to increase the impact of targeted sanctions as a policy tool responsive to human rights violations and corruption.  

    • Serve as a liaison to U.S. government personnel responsible for targeted human rights and anti-corruption sanctions in both the executive and legislative branches.

    • Serve as a resource to partner NGOs, including by conducting on-site and remote trainings and consultations on human rights and anti-corruption sanctions accountability.

    • Research and edit GMA case files produced by partner NGOs.

    • In coordination with other Human Rights First staff, serve as a resource to pro bono attorneys assisting the GMA network.

       



  • As assigned, assist the Senior Vice President for Policy and foreign policy team in research and advocacy related to U.S. foreign policy and global human rights issues.

  • Other duties as requested based on department and/or organizational need.



REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE:



  • An undergraduate degree and at least one year of professional experience, plus demonstrated interest in human rights, including relevant internships and/or professional experience; advanced degree preferred.  

  • Strong research and writing skills, including the ability to monitor and analyze relevant national and international policy and legal developments.

  • Demonstrated verbal advocacy skills and an ability to translate highly technical material into understandable concepts for a variety of audiences.

  • Project management experience, strong organizational and interpersonal skills, and an ability to work independently, while functioning as a member of a team, and coordinate efforts internally and with outside partners.

  • A strong work ethic, demonstrated capacity to take initiative, and an ability to manage numerous tasks simultaneously, work under pressure, and meet deadlines.

  • A sense of humor and an ability to work collegially with other staff members.
