The Associate Group Controller – External Reporting and Technical Accounting will report to the Corporate Controller, and is responsible for ensuring the accuracy and completeness of reported subsidiary information for a portfolio of companies (including the application of proper accounting treatment, consistent with company-wide policies), in addition to acting as a Corporate liaison facilitate the completion of special projects and implement Corporate initiatives.  The Associate Group Controller – External Reporting and Technical Accounting will also work with the Director of Financial Reporting to assist in the preparation of the Company’s external filings (8-K, 10-Q/K, 11-K, proxy, DOL filings, etc.) and ensure the Company’s compliance with technical accounting and external reporting developments and requirements.  Responsibilities include but are not limited to: 

  • Provide knowledgeable and timely accounting information to senior management by acquiring and maintaining a strong knowledge of portfolio of companies’ business and financial results (balance sheet, P&L, key performance indicators, products, systems, controls, customers, suppliers, etc.).
  • Visit subsidiary locations periodically to gain an understanding of the business and any unique issues of that subsidiary.  In the process, observe local procedures and internal controls and learn the basic functions of the subsidiary’s computer system and its capabilities.
  • Support senior financial and operational management decision making, by developing proficiency in creating standard reports using Hyperion and ad-hoc reports from the Hyperion platform using Excel.
  • Resolve data fluctuations, negative trends or inconsistencies in a timely manner by working with subsidiary and/or corporate management while adhering to the close calendar.
  • Identify and evaluate risks by performing periodic reviews of subsidiary procedures for compliance with company policies, along with periodically interfacing and partnering with Internal Audit.
  • Identify and communicate best practices to subsidiary personnel in order to implement agreed upon action items from internal audit findings.
  • Coordinate information needs of Corporate Tax, Human Resources, Operations or other departments from designated subsidiaries, and review information for completeness and accuracy. 
  • Assist with the preparation of documents for periodic filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission, including Quarterly Reports on Form 10-Q, Annual Reports on Forms 10-K and 11-K.    
  • Manage XBRL process relating to the filing of periodic reports with the SEC.
  • Perform accounting research including researching new accounting standards using research software tools, implementing processes to comply with new accounting standards and documenting conclusions in written format.  
  • Maintain Continuing Professional Education and attend technical accounting seminars in order to maintain technical expertise to advise group on new accounting pronouncements, SEC/FASB initiatives and other technical accounting developments. 
  • Coordinate with external auditors.  This will involve preparing documents requested by auditors and reviewing work performed by others for external auditors. 
  • Challenge the status quo and help find more efficient and effective ways of performing duties.
  • Help the department standardize and document processes and procedures.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality with respect to work with non-public financial, operational, and acquisition-related information.
  • Adhoc projects as necessary.

Requirements

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are required, as well as the ability to work well in teams and with a variety of people.
  • Experience with consolidations, business combinations, LIFO, and foreign currency accounting a plus. 
  • Ability to work well in a deadline-oriented environment with the willingness to work extended hours, if necessary.
  • Ability to handle extremely confidential, sensitive matters with utmost professionalism and discretion. 
  • Technical capabilities must include proficiency with Microsoft Office products.
Required Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.
  • CPA strongly preferred. 
  • Background should include at least 5 years working for a Big Four public accounting firm or another national firm.
  • Strong background in SEC reporting is required, including either heavy experience with multiple SEC clients while working in public accounting or current responsibility for producing SEC documents for a public company.
