Milwaukee Repertory Theater, a LORT theater located in the heart of Wisconsin's largest metropolitan area, is currently seeking applicants for the position of Artist in Residence. Our mission is to ignite positive changes in the cultural, social, and economic vitality of our community by creating world-class theater experiences that entertain, provoke, and inspire meaningful dialogue among an audience representative of Milwaukee's rich diversity. Position Summary: This newly created position of Artist in Residence, the first of its kind for Milwaukee Rep, will be an artist from, or familiar with the Milwaukee Community who will work for Milwaukee Rep on producing, directing, and collaborating directly with the Education and Community Engagement strands of our work. They will direct and/or act in work on our stages. They will be responsible for the development, curation, and cultivation of our major new upcoming Community Engagement and New Play Development Project. They will be a community spokesperson and advocate to strengthen Milwaukee Rep's relationship within the communities of Milwaukee, and work in collaboration with other departments on audience development in these communities. They will be an integral part of season planning and execution, and will manage all local casting. They will also work with our Emerging Professional Residents as an advocate and resource, and guide them in the development of a culminating project.

Other major responsibilities include:

  • Manage the major new upcoming Community Engagement and New Play Development project, including development of project and recruitment of community partners in Milwaukee's black community.
  • Work to uphold the mission and core values of the theater, with a raised consciousness towards ED&I efforts.
  • Direct up to one fully produced production each season, and direct workshops, virtual online content, and other events
  • Participate in and support the season-planning process to ensure artistic programming aligns with the mission, institutional goals and priorities.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with local theatrical groups, institutional groups, and communities in Milwaukee
  • Serve on Milwaukee Rep's Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee.
  • Support the Emerging Professional Residency (EPR) Program, which bridges academic training and professional practice in a nationally respected, 50-year-old professional training program.
  • Lead local casting efforts, working in conjunction with external casting directors as necessary.
  • Participate or lead talk backs, when necessary and appropriate.
  • Line Manage one production in the Stackner and Stiemke Studio, as assigned. Attend Designer Runs, Previews, and other performances, as determined in conjunction with the Artistic Producer, to support producing needs of the institution and to ensure that productions reach and maintain a high standard throughout the rehearsal process and duration of the run.
  • Collaborate with other staff as necessary on long-term mission-shaping and execution. With the rest of the Artistic Staff, practice disciplined, day-to-day management of Artistic Department communication by: directing guest artistic communication, requests, concerns, etc., to appropriate departments or facilitate solutions when necessary.
  • Respond to patron correspondence as necessary and appropriate.
  • Act as support for the Curtain Call Ball and other fundraising efforts.

Compensation and Benefits: The annual salary for this position starts at $43,000, commensurate with experience. Milwaukee Repertory Theater employees receive benefits including 100% employer paid health and dental insurance for individuals, a paid time off package, a 403(b) retirement plan, and employer contributions to a health savings account.



  1. Five+ years experience as a professional actor and/or director in the field.
  2. Proven track record of successful community organizing and project management.
  3. Two+ years teaching and advocacy in the theatrical field, and experience in building affinity groups for artists of color, or equivalent experience.
  4. Extensive network of connections within the black community and other communities of color in Milwaukee and surrounding areas.

Additional Requirements:

  • Extensive knowledge of the Milwaukee area casting pool and other Milwaukee artists.
  • Proven experience in organizing community-based events and other producing experience.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Outlook, and Word
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills and ability to work well within a team environment
  • The ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines independently with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends, as necessary. Ability to work overtime, on occasion, and as necessary to complete the required duties of the position
  • Ability to pass a background check in compliance with local and/or federal employment laws.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or touch objects.
