Fermilab is America's premier laboratory for particle physics and accelerator research, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. We support discovery science experiments in Illinois as well as other locations around the world including; deep underground mines in South Dakota and Canada, mountaintops in Arizona and Chile, and additionally the South Pole.

The Frameworks, DAQ and Electronics (FDE) department within the Scientific Computing Division of Fermilab seeks an Application Physicist, Computer Engineer, or Electrical Engineer to contribute to the department's development and deployment of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) techniques in real-time data acquisition (DAQ), processing, and control systems solutions for particle physics experiments. The FDE department contributes to small and large scale collaborations - designing, implementing, and commissioning hardware, firmware, and software solutions. The successful applicant will work closely with other FDE department members and contribute with an emphasis on firmware development on such projects as Mu2e, CMS, DUNE, and PIPII. The department also has ongoing research and development efforts in the direction of web-based graphical user interfaces and "internet-of-things" control systems. Depending on the applicant's specific interests, in addition to developing FPGA firmware with opportunities in machine learning and artificial intelligence, the selected applicant may be called upon to perform calculations, design/test/debug electronic hardware, or write software.

You Will
  • Work closely with colleagues and experimenters to develop AI and ML real-time solutions that meet the needs of experiments.
  • Design, code, test, debug, document, and maintain AI and ML systems for DAQ and control system components for High Energy Physics applications.
  • Plan small projects from inception to completion and bring them to operating status.
  • Provide technical direction to draftspersons, designers, engineering associates, technicians or less senior engineers, as assigned.
  • May participate in technical conferences and publication.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

We Are Looking For
  • Master degree and 1+ years of engineering experience (including internships) or Bachelor's degree and 3+ years of engineering experience or Ph.D. and 4+ years of physics experience from an ABET Accredited University.
  • Professional knowledge of basic theories, concepts, principles, and methodology for practicing in the engineering or applied physics discipline.
  • Knowledge of hardware, firmware, and software.
  • Possess basic project planning skills in developing specifications and documents for small projects that involve concepts from inception to completion.
  • Ability to perform a variety of standard engineering techniques.
