Job Summary: Teaching artists within Denver Botanic Gardens' School of Botanical Art & Illustration provide art instruction in various media and artforms, including but not limited to watercolor, colored pencil, pen/ink, graphite, charcoal, printmaking, drawing, painting, jewelry, paper arts, bookbinding, fiber, art history and other specialized media as School needs dictate. Teaching and learning delivery can be through multi-session classes, workshops, demonstrations, open studios, or other formats. Teaching artists are scheduled for classes based on School and student needs. Once hired, teaching artists may also suggest courses that meet School aims.

Career Type: On-call

Qualifications/ Experience: Bachelor's degree in fine art discipline, scientific illustration or related field from four-year college or university. Professional artist with relevant experience teaching adult and/or teen audiences. Bilingual English-Spanish skills preferred.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Instructs students in a studio classroom, lab, or other setting. Most studio courses include technique demonstration, lecture, critique, and work in class by students.
  • Prepares, distributes, and utilizes instructional support materials, including course syllabi, supplementary materials, instructional media, and other devices as appropriate.
  • Determines and orders student and teaching supplies as assigned.
  • Participates as a team member in departmental meetings and planning activities.
  • Participates in curriculum planning and development as assigned.
  • Administrative duties include but are not limited to, writing course descriptions as needed, attendance, creating handouts/reference materials, and artwork reviews.

Other Job Duties:

  • Represents the School of Botanical Art & Illustration and Denver Botanic Gardens to local, regional, and national communities, business, public agencies, and other organizations in a professional manner.
  • When relevant, adapt learning procedures to the online/remote learning environment ensuring comparable quality of instruction and student-teacher interaction.
  • Participates as a team member in departmental meetings and planning activities.
  • Maintain collaborative working relationships with managers, co-workers and others.
  • Maintain a positive, helpful and solution-oriented demeanor.
  • Perform other duties as requested by curatorial team and management, including general office responsibilities.
