Job Summary
Willamette Valley Communications Center (WVCC) is a division of the City of Salem and the Salem Fire Department. WVCC dispatches for multiple Police, Fire and Medical agencies in Lincoln, Polk and Marion counties.

9-1-1 Call Takers receive emergency and non-emergency phone calls from the public. Through call questioning they determine if there is a need for police, fire or an ambulance to respond. They also provide answers to questions the public may have that does not require an in-person response or refer callers to the agency or person who can best assist them.

9-1-1 Call Takers receive training in an academy setting at both WVCC and at the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST). When training is complete the
9-1-1 Call Taker is certified through DPSST as a Basic Certified Telecommunicator and through the Association of Public -Safety Communications Officials (APCO) as an Emergency Medical Dispatcher.

9-1-1 Call Takers must be able to think quickly, retain a vast amount of information and be able to manage stress and emotion while performing their job duties. This job requires the use of multiple computers and other equipment as well as shift work to include holidays, night and weekends.

What are the minimum qualifications?
  • Must pass the pre-employment drug test (including marijuana)
  • Must pass the pre-employment background check, criminal background check, and psychological exam.
  • Typing certificate: 35 wpm, with 95% accuracy. For this recruitment only, online typing tests will be accepted.
  • Must be able to work periodic overtime and a variety of 24-hour rotating shifts including holidays and weekends.
  • Pass a vision and hearing examination.
  • Successful completion of the Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) and Basic Tele-communicator courses provided by WVCC by the end probationary period.
  • Graduation from high school or a G.E.D. and experience in performing high-activity call receiving work, communicating via telephone equipment, or dealing with emergency related requests from the public.
Any combination of experience and training that demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skill and abilities as listed, and ability to perform the examples of work.

Certifications/Licenses:

  • Typing certificate: 35 wpm, with 95% accuracy.
  • Must be able to obtain required state certifications during the probationary period.

    Successful candidates that pass the phone interviews will be moved forward to the background investigation phase of the process.

    Tentative hire date: April 12, 2021.
