In a time of rapid and disruptive change in the media landscape, ideastream is laying the foundation for its digital transformation and future. The digital transformation and future ideastream is pursuing is one based on an organizational culture shift; one that envisions an organization that operates on the principles of agility, iteration and experimentation while making content and product decisions on the basis of data and audience engagement. ideastream further envisions an organization where its staff, as a whole and over time, has the skills and orientation to produce digital-first content and products.

In that context, the Managing Producer, Digital Media, will play a pivotal role in driving the organizations digital culture transformation.

Position Summary

The Managing Producer, Digital Media (Managing Producer) will be a dynamic leader, working across the Content Department to drive digital-first content creation and digital engagement, build staff capacity and capability to produce high-quality digital content on all digital platforms, and optimize content performance on all ideastream digital properties.

This position requires a highly creative, collaborative, innovative, and disciplined leader who is well-versed in modern, digital content creation, existing and emerging digital content platforms, data analytics systems and new digital products. S/he is also mindful and sensitive to conventional production platforms. S/he will embody a spirit of creative experimentation, while maintaining a disciplined and calculated approach to continuous improvement to the use of data and audience engagement to inform content creation.

The Managing Producer will be a key member of the Content Department leadership team which includes the Managing Producer - Community Affairs, Managing Producer - Health and Managing Producer - Arts & Culture.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

This role has three primary areas of responsibility:

Content and Audience Engagement

  • In collaboration with Content Department Units (e.g. News, Health, Arts/Culture, Education, Community Affairs) and independently, generates digital-first content ideas for distribution on web and social media platforms

  • Facilitates the production of and edits digital content across the Content Department

  • Manages a contract-based digital media video producer

  • Facilitates the use of digital engagement and social media tools across Content Department Units to inform content creation

  • Drives digital content innovation, looking ahead on trends, using best practices and available technology to create new concepts and new ways to engage audiences

  • Facilitates digital content creation and distribution for any grant or sponsor-funded digital projects, as those projects are established

Capacity and Capability Building

  • In collaboration with the Senior Manager, Digital Lead, codifies lessons learned, develops digital-first content creation and curation guidelines and conducts trainings with staff

  • Assists all Content Department staff with building their digital skillsets using more hands-on and one-on-one coaching

  • Actively advocates for use of new tools, products, services and marketing that will ensure rapid and sustainable scaling of digital content for new audiences

  • Recommends policies, strategies and protocols that advance ideastreams digital transformation efforts

Web/Social Media Content Optimization

  • Working with the Digital Media Manager, ensures that content posted on ideastream.org and ideastream social media platforms is optimized for audience reach and engagement - optimized meaning what is presented on ideastream.org landing pages at different points of the day is timely and relevant and ensuring that elements of Search Engine Optimization best practices are employed by reporters and producers     


Knowledge, Skills, Aptitudes

  • Knowledge of digital media production, editorial standards/management and journalism practices is required; knowledge of multiple media production (TV, radio) and digital engagement platforms and techniques is preferred

  • Thorough understanding of interactive media, publishing, and other digital information and emerging communication technologies

  • Excellent overall communication and presentation skills, including ability to edit and coach the work of others

  • Passion for digital media and its capability to enrich and inform people and strengthen communities, and an understanding of its potential for communications, audience development, and service

  • Strong familiarity with data terminology and analytics systems (e.g. Google Analytics, Facebook Insights, Twitter Analytics)

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues across the organization


  • Supervisory/management experience is required - must demonstrate an ability to foster high standards and an ability to coach, inspire and lead.

  • Five years of demonstrated leadership experience is required.

  • At least eight years of demonstrated experience in journalism, digital media or some combination therein is required.


Bachelors degree or equivalent experience. Masters degree preferred.

    • Frequent use of hands for data entry/keystrokes and simple grasping.
